COMPUTATIONAL GRIDS: NEW CHALLENGES FOR DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING

The Computer Science and Information Management (CSIM) Program, School of Advanced Technologies will be holding a special lecture on 8 March 2002, 1:00 p.m. in CS Room 209. The lecture entitled 'Computational Grids: New Challenges for Distributed Computing' will be conducted by Prof. Yakup Paker (e-mail: Paker@dcs.qmul.ac.uk), Department of Computer Science, Queen Mary, University of London.

ABSTRACT:

Clustering of a wide variety of geographically distributed resources, such as supercomputers, storage systems, data sources, special facilities, etc., as a unified resource has led to the concept of 'Computational Grids'. This is analogous to the electrical power grid that provides power to consumers by simple electrical connections, irrespective where the power generators are located or their type. The computational grid technology thus attempts to provide users transparent access to the entire set of resources connected. Thus the computational grid needs to cope with aspects such as authentication, name space, resource management, scheduling, accounting, etc. At the same time, a number of problems in modern distributed computing are being addressed under the area broadly referred as peer-to-peer computing. Under this heading a wide range of technologies are developed to increase the utilisation of information, bandwidth and computing resources in the Internet. This lecture investigates the type of problems posed by the computational grids and to what extend those overlap with or differ from the concerns of peer-to-peer distributed computing.

FUTURE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS; SOFTWARE RECONFIGURABLE RADIO

The Telecommunications Program of School of Advanced Technologies, AIT and the IEEE Communications Society (COMSOC), Thailand Chapter will organize a lecture on Friday, 8 March at 3:00 p.m. in the Milton E. Bender Jr. Auditorium.

The lecture -- sponsored by the Communications Research Lab (CRL) Japan -- will be conducted by Prof. Ryuji Kohno.

RECENT PROGRESS OF ROBOTIC RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR

The Industrial Systems Engineering Program, School of Advanced Technologies will hold a seminar on
Wednesday, 13 March, 1:30 p.m. entitled 'Recent Progress of Robotic Research and Development Seminar.' The seminar will be conducted in room 106, Chalerm Prakiat Building by Prof. Toshio Fukuda, Center for Cooperative Research in Advanced Science & Technology Nagoya University, Japan

Abstract:

There are a lot of R&D; in robotics in the world. The robotic research is moving from the manufactures applications to the service sectors. The service robots include the inspection and maintenance robots for hazardous environments demining robots, medical applications, agricultural applications, human care, entertainment and educational applications. These robotics research and developments will be shown in this presentation.

All ISE students are expected to attend. Others are welcome.

ARRPET ANNUAL REVIEW WORKSHOP

The 'Asian Regional Research Programme on Environmental Technology (ARRPET)' will hold its Annual Review Workshop on 19-20 March 2002 at AIT.

Funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), ARRPET is coordinated by AIT and involves 20 National Research Institutions (NRIs) in 8 Asian countries, namely, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. The program's major research themes include: Wastewater Treatment and Management, Sustainable Solid Waste Landfill Management in Asia, Improving Air Quality in Asian Developing Countries and Industrial and Hazardous Waste Treatment and Management.

Over 30 Researchers from eight different Asian countries are expected to attend this event. The workshop aims at evaluation and discussion of the results and achievements of the on-going project research under ARRPET during the year 2001. Officials from Sida as well as experts from Sweden are also expected to take part in the proceedings of this workshop. More details about the programme can be obtained from the programme website
http://www.arrpet.ait.ac.th)

For further details about the workshop, please contact Dr. Ajit P. Annachhatre, Urban Environmental Engineering and Management Program, School of Environment, Resources and Development, AIT. at tel. 02 524-5644
