Seminars, Workshops and Conferences
July 28 - August 1, 2003:: The Regional Inception Workshop will be organized by AIT Extension for Asian Development Bank.
The workshop will be organized with a view to launch the 2004 Round of the International Comparison Program (ICP) in the Asian and Pacific Region and will be attended by some 50 experts from 22 participating Developing Member Countries (DMC). Each DMC will send at least two representatives each -- a price statistician and a national accountant.
Among the important topics to be discussed during the workshop are: (1) the ICP 2004 and strategies for its implementation in the Asia and Pacific Region; (2) technical issues, such as Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) and Poverty Assessment; Harmonization of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and ICP; the National Accounts and Expenditure Classification including data sources and expenditure weights, pricing concepts, comparability and representativeness of items and the preparation of the structured product descriptions. A two separate 1?-day workshops will be held for the national accountants and price statisticians. The inception workshop will be concluded by a round table discussion to discuss the summary reports of the two separate workshops, to review the ICP timeline for the next 12 months, and to address the ICP training needs for the region.

August 4 - 15 2003:: A refresher course on 'Imaging the Future: Global Monitoring of the Environment' is organized by the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), The Netherlands in collaboration with the new program on Geosystem Exploration and Petroleum Geoengineering (GEPG) at the School of Civil Engineering, AIT.
To be held at the AIT Center, the course is designed for geologists, geomorphologists, engineering geologists, geophysicists and geoscientists from the Mekong region who are engaged in the fields of Earth Science. The course will particularly benefit those involved in exploration for geo-resources, exploitation of these resources and related issues on environment and land use inventories.
The two-week activity will center on geological remote sensing and will highlight specialist knowledge in earth science fields, geo-information management and earth observation methods. At the end of two weeks, the event is expected to create an expert body of earth scientists capable of independently tackling earth science problems, to develop a conceptual framework for understanding potential new sources of information, to assist in developing strategies for data acquisition, and to provide insights into where data can be retrieved.
Moreover, the course will present not only technological advancements in sensor systems but also global strategies that space agencies are working on. An example is GMES where the European Space Agency and the European Union work together with end-users from all over Europe and the rest of the world on global monitoring issues.
Twenty-two participants are joining the course consisting of ITC alumni, staff from the newly established ministries of Environment and Natural Resources in both Vietnam and Thailand, staff from organizations in the Mekong having links with ITC, direct superiors of ITC Alumni, and others from participating organizations.

December 15, 2003: The 'Fumio Nishino Symposium on Civil Engineering Education' will be held on December 15, 2003 the Bali Hilton, Indonesia. The symposium -organized by friends and students of Prof. Nishino- recognizes Prof. Nishino's 30 plus years of eminent contributions to the expansion of civil engineering education and professional societies in the Asia-Pacific region.
Prof. Nishino was among the first group of Japanese faculty members seconded to AIT in the early 70s. He was appointed to the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1984, and later played a vital role in the international cooperation of engineering education and professional societies in Asia and the Pacific.
The symposium offers a platform for the discussion of issues relevant to the civil engineering professions. National reports on the condition of the profession from participating countries will form the core of the symposium. From such updates, participants will have a chance to deliberate and make functional resolutions.
For details of the symposium program, please go to
