October 14-15, 2003: Workshop on Hydropower Competence Network for Education and Training will be held at the AIT Conference Center.
The Water Engineering and Management of the School of Civil Engineering is co-organizing this two-day workshop on 'Hydropower Competence Network for Education and Training' along with the International Center for Hydropower, Norway and New Energy Foundation, Japan. The workshop is held under the auspices of the International Energy Agency's Implementing Agreement for Hydropower Technologies and Programmes - Phase 2, in a new Annex which focuses on the use of the Internet in education and training.
Twenty-four participants from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Philippines, Nepal, Vietnam and Thailand and the Annex-7 Member Countries - Norway, Sweden and Japan are attending the event. At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to have been acquainted with the Annex and its objectives, one of which is to create a pilot version of an Internet-based international network for training of personnel in the hydropower industry.

Background:
ADB, through RETA 6038: Networking with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), has started initiatives of networking with quality research institutions with the objective of augmenting access to technical know how. Through networking, it is hoped to make use of the mutual expertise of AIT and ADB in the capacity building and operational activities of DMCs.
Seminar Objective:
The seminar aims to familiarize the faculty and staff of AIT about the ADB policies for engagement of consultants.
Topic:
The seminar will focus on the ADB Consulting Services and will describe ADB policies in consultants' engagement. The seminar will cover registration of consultants, both individually and as firms. It will illustrate all aspects associated with the recruitment of consultants including registration, expressions of interest, short-listing procedures, letter of invitation, how to submit a competitive technical proposal, preparation of a financial proposal, contract negotiations and contract administration.

October 31, 2003: 'Intensive course on Nanomaterials' seminar organized by National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC), SAT in collaboration with National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC) and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA). The seminar will be held at 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in room B-202, AIT Conference Center.
The course lecturers will be as follows: Prof. Heinrich Hofmannh, Director of Powder Technology Laboratory Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Switzerland; Dr. Joydeep Dutta, Associate Professor, Microelectronics, School of Advanced Technologies, AIT; and Dr. Margarethe Hofmann, President, Swiss Association for Materials Science and Technology, Switzerland
Introduction
Nanotechnology will be a strategic branch of science and engineering for
this century that will fundamentally restructure the technologies currently
used. In countries like United States, Europe, Switzerland, Australia,
Japan, Singapore, and others, several research initiatives have been
undertaken over the last few years both by government and industry alike,
to capitalize on the development of nanotechnology through large scale
research and development efforts. The National Science and Technology
Development Agency (NSTDA) is now focusing on nanotechnology and have
recently set up a Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC), the fourth National
Center besides BIOTEC, NECTEC and MTEC. Given the impetus for the
development of nanotechnology related activities in Thailand, NANOTEC
Center is organizing a special course on Nanomaterials to be delivered by
specialists in this area designated for scientists & researchers interested
in nanotechnology research and development both in the academia, government
research laboratories and the private sector.
The course will run for five hours with short breaks for lunch and refreshment
& will cover important aspects of nanomaterials giving an introduction to
budding enthusiasts of Nanoworld. The broad course content is:
- Introduction in nanomaterials (critical lengths scales, quantum
confinement) - Synthesis methods
- Biomimetics, Self-assembling of particles
- Structured nanoparticulate films using templates like virus, proteins, DNA, or micelles
- Functional properties of nanostructured materials (optical, electrical, magnetic, chemical)
- Applications
Prof. Hofmann and Dr. Dutta have been teaching nanomaterials at the Swiss
Federal Institute of Technology since 1997, probably the first course of
its kind in Europe. Dr. Mrs. Hofmann is an expert in medical applications
of nanomaterials and will introduce some of these aspects in the course.
Lecture notes will be supplied during the course and all presentations will be in English.

Water Resources in the 21st Century under Climate Change Scenarios seminar will be held 1:00 p.m. at the Milton Bender Auditorium.
Introduction
Water resources around the world are under high stress due to escalating rate of increase of demand, especially in Asian region due to its high rate of economic development and population and growth. Climate change has aggravated this problem with its large impact in water resources characteristics. For adequate planning and management of water resources in the 21st century, it has become necessary to study availability of water resources both temporal and spatial domains incorporating the possibility influence of climate and socio-economic changes.
Associate Professor Dr. Taikan of the University of Tokyo is an internationally renowned leading researcher in Japan, who has been conducting research on the above issues including Land-atmosphere interaction and its modeling, Inter-annual variation of global climate and the Asian Monsoon, Global water resources analysis, Virtual water, Isotope analysis, etc. Dr. Oki and his team have been actively involved in various international projects including GEWEX, GLASS, GSWP, IAHS PUB, etc. He has been selected as one of the Future Water Leaders by the IWRA, the Stockholm International Water Institute, and the Third World Centre for Water Management as potential water leaders of the future. He and his team have received the prestigious Tison Award of IAHS this year.
In this seminar, Dr. Oki and two of his colleagues, Assistant Prof. Dr. Shinjiro Kanae and Research Fellow Dr. Kei Yoshimura, who are involved in the research of climate change and isotope analysis, will present about their on-going research and findings.

December 1-19, 2003: The Electric Power System Management (EPSM), Energy Field of Study of Asian Institute of Technology will organize a medium training workshop on Power System
Operation, Automation and Deregulation at AIT Conference Center. The training workshop is organized into three modules, namely, Power System Operation (Dec. 1-4), Power System Automation (Dec. 8-9, Dec. 11-12), and Power System Deregulation (Dec. 15-19).
Attendees may be registered for one or more modules of this training
workshop.
January 14-16, 2004:: International Conference on 'Electric Supply Industry in Transition: Issues and Prospect for Asia' will be held at the AIT Conference Center.
The conference is co-organized by the Power Systems Engineering Research Center (PSERC, comprising of more than a dozen leading universities in the USA, including U.C. Berkeley), University of Technology, Sydney, Australia, and Asian Institute of Technology. The conference is coordinated by Professor Surapong Chirarattananon, SERD, AIT
The conference focus will be on 'Electricity Supply Industry in Transition': pertinent issues and prospects for Asia. The topic is timely as most of the utilities around the world, including developing nations, are changing the way they do businesses in electricity supply. A variety of people, power utilities, private power producers and academic institution, are expected to benefit from this conference.
