Seminars, Workshops and Conferences
June 10, 2004: GDS Seminar on 'Bangladeshi Women's Temporary Migration to Malaysia's Industries: Gains or Losses in a Global Era?' will be conducted by Anja Rudnick, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The seminar will be held from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. in room E229, SERD Building
The seminar is based on research carried out on the temporary migration of Bangladeshi women to Malaysia. The research findings shows that poverty is the main push factor for Bangladeshi women to seek work in 'global' export-oriented industries in Malaysia. However, poverty, as will be argued, is clearly gendered and socially constructed.
The research also found that once in Malaysia, Bangladeshi women found themselves caught in a 'good girl' - 'bad girl' imagery, which led to conflicting convictions of being 'good' versus partially internalized images of being 'bad'. Women's struggles over this imagery related to the social organization of both places and the intersections with global processes; i.e. the promises of 'the global' -work and remunerations.
The seminar will:
- contextualize the study within the larger field of (female) migration within Asia;
- look into the underlying reasons behind Bangladeshi women's decision to migrate;
- highlight working conditions, remunerations and the impact of the Asian economic crisis;
- focus on ways in which migrant women strategized to overcome dilemmas and how this influenced women's well being and 'positionality' in space and place.
About the speaker:
Anja Rudnick is a PhD-candidate from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Anja Rudnick is currently at AIT, in the field of Gender and Development Study (GDS), participating in the Asia-link Student Exchange Programme. Anja Rudnick is in the process of writing up her PhD-dissertation.

December 13 - 15, 2004: 2nd International Conference on Innovations in Food Processing Technology and Engineering will be held at the AIT Conference Center.
The role of food processing technology and engineering in the economic development need not be overemphasized. Food science, technology and engineering (FS&E;) have been at the very core of numerous development and achievements to make a wide variety of foods available year around in palatable, nutritious, aesthetically packaged, in terms of appearance, functionality, storability, nutrition, and economic viability of innovative processes and modern food products.
Realizing the concepts, putting in practice and reaping the harvest through successful marketing. The role of FS&E; has been indispensable in not only making the necessary tools available but in review of new developments in food processing technology and engineering along with dissemination of relevant information among scientists, engineers, technologists and other professionals.
Technical Program: The technical program will include plenary and keynote lectures, parallel lectures and poster sessions.
Original contributors, case histories, of actual industrial operations, state-of-the-art papers, and commercial information on the following subjects are invited.
- Food processing technology
- Physical properties of foods
- Thermal processing and preservation
