Special seminar on 'Using Law as a Tool to Ensure Meaningful Public Participation in Environmental Assessment' will be held at 10:00 a.m. in S101, SERD meeting room. The seminar will be conducted by Prof. Andrew John Sinclair, Professor, Natural Resources Institute, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada

Abstract

Brief evaluation of legal provisions for public participation and suggests needed reform to ensure that participatory activities are meaningful. The literature on public participation provides the evaluative criteria and document review, semi-structured interviews and key informant input provides insight into legal reform. Reform in the way of essential components covering issues such as access and purpose, notice, access to information and the provision of resources in considered. As well, reforms related to process activities are also suggested that consider issues such as the timing of participation, two-way exchange of information, power balance and decision accountability.

ISE seminar entitled 'Tangible Space Initiative' will be delivered by Prof. Sehyung Park, Principal Researcher, KIST, Korea. The seminar will be held on at 1:30 p.m. in room IE-106, Chalerm Prakiat Building.

Abstract

Tangible Space Initiative (TSI) is a new internal project initiated by Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to explore novel integration framework for next generation Human Computer Interface (HCI) issues for interacting with responsive cyber space. The initiative involves diverse but related fields such as virtual reality (VR), intelligent control, human robotics, image processing, multimedia database, and artificial intelligence.

Prof. Sehyung Park will divide the TSI effort led by three parallel and cooperative components: Tangible Interface (TI), Responsive Cyber Space (RCS), and Tangible Agent (TA). TI controls how the user sees and manipulates the 3D cyber space directly. RCS creates and controls the virtual environment with its objects and behaviors. TA may sense and act upon the physical interface environment on behalf of any components of TSI or the user.

All ISE, CSIM, and ICT students are encouraged to attend. Others are most welcome.

10 -12 March 2005:
International symposium on ' Role of Water Sciences in Transboundary River Basin Management ' will be held in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. The symposium will be organized by the United Nations University with the support of AIT, Thammasat University, and a number of related organizations.

The symposium is an academic meeting that will serve as a venue for information exchange among transboundary water stakeholders working on Asia's international rivers especially on the Mekong Basin. In this symposium, we expect to bring water professionals together to share case studies emphasizing both risks and paths to cooperation.
