Seminars, Workshops and Conferences
21 March 2005: Numerical Simulation of Human Behavior in Evacuation from Underground MRT seminar will be conducted by Dr. Juniji Kiyono, Dept. of Urban Management, Kyoto University, Japan at 12:00 noontime in Room E220, SERD Building
Abstract
Accident occurred in an underground subway on January 17, 2005 in Bangkok. Fifty or more injuries were caused by this accident. When people rush into an exit in a confined space under an emergency situation during an earthquake, a flood, a subway accident, or a fire, forces act on person bodies and control the movement of the people. In order to investigate such a situation, numerical simulation was developed to grasp dynamic behavior of evacuees. Distinct Element Method (DEM) is used to simulate emergency evacuations from confined areas. The evacuation behavior is analyzed by a use of distinct elements. The movement of each element is determined by solving the equation of motion. A calculation algorithm in which element could avoid each other and turned naturally is proposed. Case studies such as an evacuation from underground shopping mall, an accident on the pedestrian bridge, force measurement acting on the body in the crowded subway train and so on are introduced. This method can be applied to Bangkok cases, especially the Bangkok MRT subway which just experienced an accident in January 2005 and the evacuation was not so effective.

Abstract:
Constraints of energy, time and money have always been drivers of change and inventions but now world is a village so the competition is a new dimension. Scientists and engineers are finding the available materials inadequate. In this talk MMC's (AI-SiC particulates) have been selected as the primary materials for automotive parts and for cutting wheels. These are two diverse applications. Some analytical methods are needed to understand, design and manufacture these materials, they will also be discussed.
ISE students are encouraged to attend. Others are most welcome.
