Seminars, Workshops and Conferences

7 April 2005: ISE, SAT seminar on Nanomachining Bridges Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology will be conducted by Professor Ioan Marinescu, University of Toledo, USA. The event will be held at 1:30 p.m. in room 106, Chalerm Prakiat (ISE) Building.

Abstract

The need to establish nanoprecision mechanical fabrication processes to produce 'micro/ nanofunctional structures' that have nanostructures on their surfaces and/or inside and which are capable of performing various functions are inarguably growing increasingly stronger. In industries today, holographic optical elements (OHE), silicon-on-insulator (DOI) substrates and semiconductor devices wafers for ultra large-scale integrate circuits (ULSI), micro/nanolens and micro/ nanocomponents are good examples of micro/nanofunctional structures in the field of optoelectronics and mechatronics. For all these application, the definition of precision Engineering was changed by a few orders of magnitude. Some example of nano-precision engineering processes will be presented, which include nano ELID technology, nano-polishing of magnetic heads, micro-spherical lens fabrication. A new technique, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation of indentation and scratching for SiC crystals will emphasis the novelty of this field. Finally some limitations of micro/nano processes will be pointed out.

16 - 18 May 2005 & 3 - 5 August 2005: Workshop on on-line course delivery by VClass will be offered by the Internet Education and Research Laboratory (intERLab) to all AIT faculty and staff. The course will cover well-designed sets of exercises, hands-on case studies, and experiments on the use of VClass to support teaching and on-line course offering. Following the workshop, a clinic will be set up by intERLab/DEC to support faculty for their course development. For workshop details and reservation, please contact Ms Ann Pattama at tel. ext. 5718, pattama@ait.ac.th

6 - 10 June 2005: International Conference on 'Modeling Tools for Environment and Resources Management (MTERM)'. The conference will be coordinated by the Water Engineering and Management (WEM) FoS staff in cooperation with the faculty members of the Modeling Tools for Environment and Resources Management (MTERM) and will be held at the AIT Conference Center.

Interested persons are invited to submit their research/technical papers related but not limited to the broader themes listed as follows:
