Abstract
Pore-Cor stands for Pore-Level properties correlator. It is a software package which allows the study of the pore level properties of any mesoporous or macroporous solid starting from mercury intrusion/ extrusion experimental data. Pore-Core is not dependant on the material, it concentrates on the void geometry and it is only concerned with the nature of the solid phase when this affects the void geometry, for example if the solid is compressible. In principle, Pore-Cor can be used to study any meso or maco-porous solid, such as: Outcrop sandstone, Oil and gas reservoir sandstone.
Pore-Cor assumes a real geometry for the void structure, and all properties are related directly to this same geometry. The geometry is very sample, an array of equally spaced cubic or rectangular void-junctions, which called pores, connected by circular or ellipsoidal cylinders or doubles-cones referred to as throats (others often call them pore throats). Pore-Cor loads the experimental data collected using a Mercury Porosimeter and the program converges onto experimental data using fitting parameters. Pore-Cor generates a 3D reconstruction of the internal void structure using virtual reality.
Once the 3D unit cell is generated, a number of parameters related to the material under test can be investigated. Pore-Cor generates an artificial reconstruction of the void space, and the effect of this artificiality on the simulated pore-level properties is different from property to property.
Pore-Core provides a major advance on the study of porous solids, which is vastly cheaper, more accessible and more versatile than the ultimate void structure investigation techniques such as cyclotron or n.m.r. tomography. However, the answers it gives are simulations not reality, and it is important to realize which aspects of the results are genuine and which are invention.
Pore-Cor is a software that will enable you to
- Gain a better understanding of how liquids and gases behave in pores
- Provide cost-effective enhancement or replacement of experimental pore-structure investigation methods
- Get more information from mercury porosimetry.
- View pore-fluid behaviour in a virtual reality environment
- Optimise porous materials to improve properties for applications such as oil recovery, paper coating, catalysis, impregnation, sinter strength and soil structure
16 - 18 May 2005 & 3 - 5 August 2005: Workshop on on-line course delivery by VClass will be offered by the Internet Education and Research Laboratory (intERLab) to all AIT faculty and staff. The course will cover well-designed sets of exercises, hands-on case studies, and experiments on the use of VClass to support teaching and on-line course offering. Following the workshop, a clinic will be set up by intERLab/DEC to support faculty for their course development. 6 - 10 June 2005: International Conference on 'Modeling Tools for Environment and Resources Management (MTERM)'. The conference will be coordinated by the Water Engineering and Management (WEM) FoS staff in cooperation with the faculty members of the Modeling Tools for Environment and Resources Management (MTERM) and will be held at the AIT Conference Center.

23-25 June 2005:: International Symposium on 'Floods in Coastal Cities under Climate Change Conditions' to be held at the AIT Conference Center, which is coordinated by the Regional Network Office for Urban Safety (RNUS) / SCE / AIT and sponsored by the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN).
The main objectives of the symposium are to bring together researchers, academicians, practitioners and decision makers working in related areas, to:
- discuss about impacts of floods in coastal cities under climate change,
- discuss and identify gaps in existing disaster mitigation policies and provide guidelines and strategies for improved policies for flood risk management in coastal cities under climate change condition, and
- raise public awareness about risk of sea level rising and coastal flooding.
A workshop is planned for demonstration of several case studies on assessment of socio-economic impacts of floods in coastal cities in South and South-east Asia under climate change conditions, which are carried out under a APN supported project. Any other case studies related to the themes of the symposium are welcome for demonstration.
