Phuket conference looks at energy issues

The energy field of study, School of Environment, Resources and Development is organizing an international conference called 'Energy for Sustainable Development: Issues and Prospects for Asia,' 1-3 March 2006 at Phuket Graceland Resort and Spa, in Patong Beach, Phuket.

The conference, to be chaired by H.E. Mr. Viset Choopiban, Thailand's minister of energy, offers a broad but timely theme to allow more people to exchange experiences, after the success of the international conference 'Electric Supply Industry in Transition: Issues and Prospects for Asia' in January 2004.

It will cover technical, economic, social and political dimensions of energy development, production and utilization.

Energy-related areas of interest include resource studies, plans and policies for development, plans and policies for regulation, regulation and promotion for efficient use, efficiency in transportation, technologies for efficient utilization, fuel diversity and security.

Topics of discussion may include: Global and regional demand and supply; resource development policy; new and renewable energy; international and regional energy security; cogeneration; district heating and cooling; distributed generation; hybrid systems; power system planning and operation; power system stability; application of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System controllers; pricing of electricity; restructuring of electric supply industry; independent power producers; demand-side management; integrated resource planning; regulation, promotion, and technologies for energy-efficient buildings and industries; rational use of energy; modeling and simulation; clean development mechanisms; emission trading; and building standards.

Guests for the opening program include: H.E. Mr. Viset Choopiban, Thailand's minister of energy; Prof. Surapong Chirarattananon, conveyor of the conference and SERD faculty; Prof. Said Irandoust, AIT president; Prof. Ki-ryun Choi, vice president, Institute of Energy Systems and Climate Change, Ajou University, Korea; Prof. Choosak Limsakul, dean of faculty of engineering, Prince Songkla University; Mr. Kraisi Kannasutra, managing director of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand Plc.
