Lecture focuses on land use, food prospects
The AIT community is invited to attend a United Nations Environment Programme Regional Resource Center for Asia and the Pacific lecture on 'Modeling the Land Use Change and Demand for Food Future Prospects' by Professor Kan-ichiro Matsumura, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, 7 March 2005, in room B202, AIT Conference Center.
The lecture involves a proposed model that concerns reciprocal action among demand for food, supply for food, land use change, environment and economic development. In this model, income is obtained from a calculation involving capital and labor. Then the ratio of urban population is calculated from income and it is applied for estimating the future land use change.
Prof. Matsumura is an associate professor in the Department of Applied Informatics, School of Policy Studies at Kwansei Gakuin University. He has worked as an associate professor at the University of Tokyo and as the research member in the international research and consulting department of Sanwa Research Institute Corp., which is affiliated with the Sanwa Bank, Ltd. He received a prize for excellence from the Society of Environment Science in 1999 for his published papers.
Prof. Matsumura will be accompanied by students from his university, who are studying global environment management.
