City water, sanitation conference takes place in November

A regional conference on Urban Water and Sanitation in Southeast Asian Cities will be held from 22 to 24 November 2006 in Luang Prabang, Lao P.D.R.

The conference is being organized by the Southeast Asia Urban Environemental Management Applications Project, CIDA-AIT Partnership (2003-2008), the Urban Research Institute, Ministry of Communication, Transport, Post and Construction, Lao P.D.R; the World Bank Water and Sanitation Programme Country Office in Vientiane ; and Souphanouvong University in Luang Prabang.

The three-day conference will provide an opportunity for experts, managers and researchers of Southeast Asia region to present technical, managerial, economic/financial and community participation aspects of water supply and sanitation. Gender equality and environment as well as social and cultural aspects will be the cross-cutting themes for the event. The conference aims to point out concerns in each country with regard to access to water supply, safe drinking water sources and basic sanitation, possible solutions and policy framework to improve water supply and sanitation and measures to assign responsibility for decision making. It will further incorporate experiences gained from the field as well as outcomes from academic and field research to highlight new concepts and innovative systems for sustainability.
