This WirelessU Workshop, "Wireless Internet - Emergency Networks" is co-organized by RISTEK-Indonesia, AIT and NECTEC, with support of ISIF.asia, ISOC, NSRC, THNIC Foundation and NetworkTheWorld.org in order to provide participants hands-on experience on WiMAX technologies and deploying mobile wireless network on an ad hoc basis for emergency conditions, such as after a natural disaster when a fixed network infrastructure is not available or had been destroyed.
Objectives:
- to address infrastructures and technology-related connectivity problems by coupling advances in mobile ad hoc wireless communication network in order to develop their own communications network out of the box for rural ICT development and/or in an emergency situation or in disaster areas;
- to provide technical assistance and ad-hoc communication infrastructure to volunteers/ humanitarian personnel who are working in the field and performing rescue operations in disaster situations wherein effective communication medium/ services may not be able to meet overwhelming immediate needs during a disaster; and
- to assist local training partners in the region who are exposed to a first-handed experience in the post disaster recovery and resettlement operations and actively working in the areas of rural ICT development in respective countries, and in delivering training courses to volunteers or field operators.
Target Audience:
IT staffs from NGOs, Humanitarian Foundations, Institutions, with basic knowledge and a few years experience in technologies and networking, and anyone who is interested in learning about wireless technologies and emergency networks.
