A talk on “Nanotechnology for herbal extract in cosmeceuticals” will be delivered conducted by Associate Professor Ubonthip Nimmannit (NanoCosme Lab, NANOTEC) January 20 between 16:00 – 16:45 hours at Room 102, First Floor, Outreach Building at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).
Abstract:
Nanotechnology is an advanced technology that involves working with particles at nanometer scale with structure size being 100 nanometers or smaller. Particles less than 1000 nanometers are known to change, and implementation of these properties can help create products with enhanced application. In cosmeceuticals, the most common designed platform included micelles, polymeric micelles, dendrimer, liposomes niosomes, ethosomes, glycosomes nanoparticles and nanocapsules. Smaller particles can be more readily absorbed into the skin to optimize the delivery of functional ingredients into the skin and enable these materials to reach the action site quicker. Eamples of using nanotechnology for herbal extract in cosmeceuticals are the use of Phyllanthus emblica exacts in anti-aging products.
Functional ingredients of anti-aging are retinol, vitamin C, microcollagen, herb extracts with antioxidant activities i.e. curcumin, Phyllanthus emblica extract, Centella asiatica extract etc. Examples of inorganic nanoparticles used in sunscreen are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles, since they protect the skin by reflecting ultraviolet radiation. Difference in size and surface coating can be utilized to alter surface properties of nanoparticles that help enhance biological safety. Anti-ultraviolet radiation of herbal extractc can be used instead of inorganic compounds.
