Abstract:
Dr. Kiem will begin with a brief overview of the University of Newcastle (Australia) including undergraduate and postgraduate offering and also opportunities for collaboration on research projects within the Faculty of Science and IT.
Dr. Kiem will then summarise his main research activities that include:
• Understanding and adapting to flood risk in a variable and changing climate (Australia focus)
• Eastern Seaboard Climate Change Initiative and the NSW/ACT Regional Climate Model (NARCliM)
• Climate change scenario development, impact assessment and adaptation planning for the Mekong River Basin (summary of recent work done for Asian
• Development Bank and the Mekong River Commission)
• Understanding drought in Australia and its relationship to large-scale climate phenomena (e.g. ENSO etc)
• Distributed hydrological modelling
About Dr. Kiem:
Dr Anthony Kiem is a hydroclimatologist and senior lecturer within the Faculty of Science at the University of Newcastle in Australia. His major research focus is on understanding the drivers and impacts of climate variability and change in the Asia-Pacific region. Of particular interest are hydrological extremes and how these may change in the future. Anthony has extensive experience in characterising impacts of climate variability and change, seasonal/interannual forecasting, extreme event (e.g. flood, drought, bushfire etc.) risk analysis, hydrological modelling, stochastic modelling, and water resources management.
