Seminars at AIT
The School of Civil Engineering (SCE) and the School of Environment,
Resources and Development (SERD) are very pleased to organize a seminar
on:
'A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON WATER TO 2025'
by Professor Asit K. Biswas, President of the Third World Centre
for Water Management to be held on Thursday, 29th June 2000, at 2:00 -
3:00 p.m. at RCC Auditorium.
Abstract:
Water basically disappeared from the international political agenda
during the 1990s. Recent events in the developing and developed worlds
indicate that the world has clearly underestimated the complexities and
enormity of the water problems humankind is likely to face during the coming
two decades. While much of the discussions in recent years have focused
on water scarcities, the real crisis is likely to stem from very poor water
quality management, absence of productive investments, and too much emphasis
on past management practices and not enough on new approaches to resolve
very different types of emerging problems.
Water management practices are changing rapidly because of many factors
like globalisation, information and communication revolution, technological
developments, private sector involvement and demands for public involvement.
Current indications are that water management practices during the next
20 years will change much more than what have been witnessed during the
past 20 years. Also, unlike the past, many of these changes will occur
primarily because of developments totally external to the water sector.
Asia is going to face water problems of unprecedented proportions during
the next 25 years. Premier regional institutions like AIT must play an
important role in solving Asia's current and future water problems. AIT
has the potential to become a leading global institution in the water and
environmental areas. Some suggestions would be put forward as to what AIT
could do, and how it should change to meet the challenges of equitable
and sustainable water management in Asia.
About the Resource Person:
Professor Asit K. Biswas is the President of the Third World Centre
for Water Management, Member of the Governing Board of the World Water
Council, Chairman of the Club of Tokyo, Visiting Professor at Royal Institute
of Technology in Stockholm and Past President of the International Water
Resources Association. One of the world's leading authorities on water
resources management, he has been a senior advisor to six heads of United
Nations Agencies and 17 governments. He is the author of 61 books and over
600 papers in major international scientific journals and publications,
and the Editor of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.
His work has now been translated into 31 languages.

'COMPUTING HOMOLOGY GROUPS OF SIMPLICIAL COMPLEXES
IN R^3 SEMINAR'
Prof. Sumanta Guha from the Dept. of EE&CS, University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee will conduct Computing Homology Groups of Simplicial
Complexes in R^3 on Thursday, June 29, 10 a.m., in Room CS209, CS Building
Abstract:
Recent developments in analyzing molecular structure and representing
solid models using simplicial complexes have raised the need to efficiently
compute structural information about simplicial complexes, particularly
ones that live in the 3D real world.
In this talk we will describe how to compute one important structural
invariant of simplicial complexes in an efficient manner: their homology
groups.
No prior knowledge of topology will be assumed and we shall attempt
to present necessary preliminary topological concepts in an informal manner.
All are welcome.CSIM students are requested to attend.
