Abstract
Strength and ductility are the two important factors to be considered in the design of reinforced concrete seismic-resistant structures. Many attempts have been made in the past to improve the strength, strain at peak load and ductility of conventional concrete by means of confining the members using rectangular/square/spiral hoops. Also addition of short discrete steel fibers to plain concrete was found to improve several engineering
properties such as strength, post cracking resistance, fracture toughness, structural integrity and durability. Recently, it has been realized that addition of synthetic/natural polymers to plain concrete enhances the fore said properties significantly. Considering the above an attempt has been made to combine the effects of confinement, fibers and polymers on the strength and ductility of conventional reinforced concrete. The seminar
presents the outcome of this experimental investigation .

Marinescu, Visiting Professor & Fulbright Fellow And Professor and Director Precision Micro-Machining Center College of Engineering University of Toledo Toledo, Ohio, USA. It will be held at 1:00 p.m. in room IE-106, Chalerm Prakiat Building.
Abstract:
The needs to establish ultra precision mechanical fabrication processes to
produce 'micro-functional structures', which have microstructures on their
surfaces and/or inside, and capable of performing various functions, are
inarguably growing stronger and stronger. In industries today, holographic
optical elements (OHE), silicon-on-insulator (DOI) substrates and
semiconductor devices wafers for ultra-large scale integrated circuits
(ULSI), micro-lens and micro parts / components are good examples of
micro-functional structures in the field of optoelectronics and
mechatronics. For all these application, the definition of precision
engineering was change by a few orders of magnitude. Some example of new
precision engineering processes will be presented. This will include
atomistic level polishing of AlTiC magnetic heads, micro spherical lens
fabrication, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of the abrasive
processes. Finally, some of the limitations of the precision engineering
processes will be pointed out.
All Microelectronics and ISE students are expected to attend. Interested persons are
most welcome.

Introduction
For more than ten years electricity business has been experiencing a steadily increasing number of electricity sectors being reformed. Thereby some reforms are being described as a 'success', some as a 'good start' and some even as a 'failure'. The used criteria mostly are traded volumes and the downwards price development for success, for failure you find market power, upwards price development and a bad system reliability. In all these reformed electricity sectors you can find companies having successfully adapted to the new conditions, new companies having used the opportunity to start a more or less successful business, but also a proper number of not more existing companies - companies having gone bankrupt, been bought up or even been liquidated.
The Workshop 'Reforming Electricity Sectors: The Nordic Power Market' will give participants an overview over reforms and developments worldwide. Our resource persons from Nord Pool Consulting will enable you to take part in their unique hands-on experience and knowledge from the Nordic Power Market and other selected markets. The workshop is aiming at transfer of knowledge and experience through presentations, working groups and trading simulations.
