Seminars, Workshops and Conferences

11 - 13 January 2005: 2nd International Conference on Innovations in Food Processing Technology and Engineering will be held at the AIT Conference Center.

The role of food processing technology and engineering in the economic development need not be overemphasized. Food science, technology and engineering (FS&E;) have been at the very core of numerous development and achievements to make a wide variety of foods available year around in palatable, nutritious, aesthetically packaged, in terms of appearance, functionality, storability, nutrition, and economic viability of innovative processes and modern food products.

Realizing the concepts, putting in practice and reaping the harvest through successful marketing. The role of FS&E; has been indispensable in not only making the necessary tools available but in review of new developments in food processing technology and engineering along with dissemination of relevant information among scientists, engineers, technologists and other professionals.

Technical Program: The technical program will include plenary and keynote lectures, parallel lectures and poster sessions.

Original contributors, case histories, of actual industrial operations, state-of-the-art papers, and commercial information on the following subjects are invited.

  • Food processing technology
  • Physical properties of foods
  • Thermal processing and preservation
  • Non-thermal processing
  • Food safety
  • Food packaging
  • Nutraceutical and functional foods
  • Postharvest preservation and processing
  • Novel technologies in food handling, processing and transport
  • Information technology applications in food industry
  • Automation in food industry
  • Food processing wastes

Please keep on visiting web site http://203.159.19.151/phfpe/conferences/fpc/index.htm for conference updates

Preliminary Registration: Contributions will be presented as keynote lectures, lectures or posters. The Technical Committee will make final decisions on the acceptance and allocation to oral or poster presentations. The abstract, not exceeding more than 300-400 words, should clearly indicate the objectives, brief methodology and conclusions.

The last date for the submission of abstracts is July 31, 2004. However, abstract received after the deadline will not be included in the proceedings but still be considered for presentation.

Application Form and Summary: Registration form and Summary in MS-Word format can be obtained by visiting: http://203.159.19.151/phfpe/conferences/fpc/index.htm

18 January 2005: GDS Seminar on 'Negotiating with Kin and Non-Kin: The Role of Social Networks in the Migration of Filipino Women into Thailand' by Mary Rose Geraldine A. Sarausad. The seminar will be held at 10:00 - 12:00 a.m. in room E229, SERD Building

Changing economic conditions and the negative impact of structural policies in the country had contributed to the forced dispersal of many Filipinos to different parts of the world, providing them with opportunities especially to those who are jobless. The dollars earned from remittances of overseas workers have helped sustain the Philippine economy, prompting the government to institutionalize the export of unskilled and skilled labour. This also gave rise to the increasing need for foreign domestic workers or caregivers such as those coming from the Philippines; thus the internationalization of reproductive labour.

Female migration has greatly contributed to the maintenance of households back home in the Philippines. Through the regular remittances of women overseas workers, members of their families enjoy the material rewards or financial gains from migration. However, little has been known or said about the experiences of these women in the process of migration, particularly the Filipina domestic workers in Thailand. Due to its relatively small number (a Philippine government agency can account for only a few documented domestic workers employed with expatriates in the country), as well as the undocumented migrant status of many others, their presence in the country is given low attention. In addition, many researches made on domestic workers overlooked the important roles of kin and non-kin relations in influencing the women's decision to migrate; in this case, on the women's choice to come to Thailand.

Using the household strategies approach and subject-level of analysis, this research delved into the capacity of the domestic workers to negotiate with kin and non-kin; wherein such connections are of great importance in the exercise of their agency, while recreating power relations among them, in the context of familial responsibility and interdependency, as well as, in view of fully integrating themselves into the society.

About the Speaker:

Ms. Mary Rose Geraldine A. Sarausad, currently teaches Social Studies (incorporating economic, development and gender issues) and Math/Statistics courses to the Bridging Program students of AIT; and also assists in teaching in-term English language courses.

She graduated with a Masters' degree in Business Administration (MBA) in 1999 from AIT and a Master of Science's (MS.c.) degree in Gender and Development Studies (GDS) in 2003, also from AIT.

She conducted research on migration during her graduate studies (2002-2003) where she also carried out a special study in Japan about Filipino domestic workers, as part of GDS/AIT, student exchange program between Japan and AIT. She continues in pursuit of her research interest on migration, specifically on Filipino domestic workers. Her work also includes research on Burmese migrants in Thailand, which she jointly conducted with a senior researcher Dr. Angkarb Korsieporn at CUSRI (Chulalongkorn University's Social Research Institute) in October 2003.

In May 2004, Ms Sarausad presented a paper with the title - The Vulnerabilities of Burmese Migrant Mothers in an Ethnic Community in Thailand, during the international conference on Gender, Development and Public Policy in an Era of Globalization, sponsored by the European Union (EU) Asia-Link, GDS Project in AIT.

Ms. Sarausad will present two papers for the international conference-Women's World 2005, in Seoul, Korea this June 2005; this includes the paper that will be presented in this GDS seminar. The other paper is titled: The Paradoxes of Migrant Life: A Closer Look into the Vulnerabilities and Concerns of Burmese Migrant Mothers in an Ethnic Community in Samutprakarn, Thailand.

20 January 2005: 'Tangible Space Initiative' seminar will be delivered by Prof. Sehyung Park, Principal Researcher, KIST, Korea. It will be held at 1:30 - 3:00 p.m., in room IE-106, Chalerm Prakiat Building.

Abstract

Tangible Space Initiative (TSI) is a new internal project initiated by Korea Institute of Science and Technology
(KIST) to explore novel integration framework for next generation Human Computer Interface (HCI) issues for
interacting with responsive cyber space. The initiative involves diverse but related fields such as virtual reality (VR), intelligent control, human robotics, image processing, multimedia database, and artificial intelligence.

We divide the TSI effort led by three parallel and cooperative components: Tangible Interface (TI), Responsive Cyber Space (RCS), and Tangible Agent (TA). TI controls how the user sees and manipulates the 3D cyber space directly. RCS creates and controls the virtual environment with its objects and behaviors. TA may sense and act upon the physical interface environment on behalf of any components of TSI or the user.

All ISE, CSIM, and ICT students are encouraged to attend. Others are most welcome.
