6-8 December 2005: Third International Symposium on Southeast Asian Water Environment
The University of Tokyo (UT) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), in cooperation with Southeast Asian Center on Water Environment Technology
(SACWET), a joint center of UT and AIT, will hold the Third International Symposium on Southeast Asian Water Environment, at the AIT Conference Center, on 6-8 December 2005.
The purpose of this Symposium is to provide a forum for discussion and exchange among researchers/practitioners in Environmental Technology and Management and related areas from the Asian Region and to promote interaction among researchers from Asia-Pacific countries, Japan and other parts of the world. We do hope that, through the Symposium, a strong network or partnership with active local change agents will be established, and our colleagues in Southeast Asia will learn more from the experts of other countries to protect the environment of the region. To do so, we are relying on the expertise and research level of the Southeast Asian community to take part in this challenge.
In this symposium, the following specific subjects are selected as the platform topics: Water Environment Conservation in Southeast Asia, Groundwater issues and Pathogenic contamination and health-related microbiology. Other topics related to water environment are also welcome as poster presentation. Participation from NGO/NPO is also welcome. Papers for oral presentations should be submitted by October 6, 2005. Papers for poster presentations should be submitted by 31 October 2005.

5 - 7 December 2005: ARRPET II Annual Review Workshop 2005
will be held by Asian Regional Research Programme on Environmental Technology (ARRPET) Phase II at AIT.
Funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), ARRPET II is coordinated by AIT and involves 18 National Research Institutions (NRIs) in 8 Asian countries, namely, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The program's major research themes include: Industrial and Hazardous Waste
Treatment and Management, Sustainable Solid Waste Landfill Management in Asia, Improving Air Quality in Asian Developing Countries and Wastewater Treatment and Management.
About 40 Researchers from 8 different Asian countries are expected to attend this event. The workshop aims at evaluation and discussion of the results and achievements of the on-going project research under ARRPET during 2004.
The workshop will also include presentation on the proposal on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) which is being developed by AIT and selected National Research Institutions involved in ARRPET II. Attendees of the workshop will also include officials from Sida as well as resource persons from Sweden.
Further information on ARRPET programme, please visit: http://www.arrpet.ait.ac.th.
For other details and information, please contact Prof. Ajit P. Annachhatre, Coordinator, ARRPET II at: ajit@ait.ac.th or the ARRPET secretariat at: arrpet@ait.ac.th
7 December 2005: Collaborative
Interference Control in xDSL Networks seminar will be conducted by Prof. Tho Le Ngoc at
3:00 04:00 pm. in TC Seminar Room 203.
Summary
Collaborative interference control (CIC) and resource management approach makes use of knowledge of an
overall xDSL network to balance the signal-to-interference ratios (SIR) in different links in order to maximize the overall throughput while satisfying the user requirements for given network topology and conditions in a harmonized manner. This topic can be considered as a complex multi-dimensional optimization problem due to multiple constraints from different individual link reach-rate performance requirements, various types of frequency-dependent channel distortions, and mutual-interference conditions. Such a problem is combinatorial in nature and its computational complexity grows exponentially with the number of constraints. Furthermore, most expressions representing the constraints and/or objective functions are highly nonlinear or
even not in a closed form. Some heuristic CIC algorithms that give a good balance between performance and complexity will be presented along with illustrative results.
About the Speaker
Dr. Tho Le-Ngoc is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering of McGill University. He is a senior member of the Ordre des Ingnieur du Quebec, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada
(EIC), and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE). He is the recipient of the 2004
Canadian Award in Telecommunications Research, and recipient of the IEEE Canada Fessenden Award
2005. His research interests include modulation, coding, multiple-access and dynamic resource allocation techniques in broadband digital communications.
