AIT WELCOMES NEW FACULTY

The School of Environment, Resources and Development and the Agriculture, Aquatic Systems and Engineering Program welcome Dr. Julie Macaranas as a post-doctoral Research Fellow and an Affiliated Faculty in the AARM field of study. She was appointed on 11 March 2000.

Dr. Macaranas from the Philippines, but now an Australian citizen, joins AIT from the Queensland University of Technology. Dr. Macaranas has an M. Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of the Philippines and a Ph.D in Fish Breeding and Genetics from Tohoku University in Japan. Dr. Macaranas has a strong research background in the application of molecular genetics in a wide range of animal species utilizing these modern genetic markers for diverse purposes, including population studies and forensics. In joining AIT she returns to her main passion of studying fish and working in the application of genetic markers to enhance the understanding of genetic introgression and population studies of commercially important catfish in the region. She will work closely with Dr. Graham Mair in developing AIT's capacity in this important research theme. The two-year post-doctoral fellowship is awarded to AIT partially by NSTDA, supplemented with funding from other sources. Dr. Macaranas can be contacted on jmacaranas@ait.ac.th and tel. 524-5453.

The School of Civil Engineering and the Water Engineering and Management Program welcome Japanese Government secondee, Dr. Toshiaki Iida, who has been appointed as Associate Professor for two years and two weeks effective 30 March 2000. His research interests revolve in the fields of environmental hydrology and applied hydrology. Dr. Iida obtained his Bachelor's, Master's and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Tokyo. He has thirteen years of experience in teaching and research in the field of environmental hydrology. A very active and young researcher in his field, Dr. Iida is on leave as Associate Professor of Hydrology at the Faculty of Agriculture, Yamagata University, Japan. He can be reached at Room WR112, tel. 524-5559.

The School of Advanced Technologies and the Industrial Systems Engineering Program welcome Dr. A.M.M. Sharif Ullah who will join the Program starting in the May 2000 term as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Ullah obtained his B. Sc. in Engineering from BUET (Bangladesh) in 1992, and Master's and Doctoral degrees in Engineering from Kansai University Graduate School (Japan) in 1996 and 1999, respectively. His research interests are applied artificial intelligence/alife; knowledge/data-base systems; intelligent manufacturing systems; intelligent machining systems; surface roughness analysis; optimization techniques for production/manufacturing processes; and applied discrete methods, such as fractals and chaos. In this May 2000 term, Dr. Ullah will teach the course AT04.02 - Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems at AIT and AITCV. He can be reached at Room IE206, Chalerm Prakiat Building, tel. 524- 5617.
