In memoriam Koos de Goede, founding Chairman of former HSD Division

Dr. Jacobus H. de Goede, or 'Koos' to all of those who knew him, passed away on 8 October 2000, at age 61. Long-serving AIT staff and faculty members would remember him as the founding Chairman of the Division of Human Settlements Development (HSD) which started in January 1978. Old and new friends would also remember him from his most recent work for AIT, in May 2000, when he came with an international evaluation mission that advised AIT and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) on future directions for German-funded support to the Institute.

THE THIRD ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM

The Third Advanced Technology Symposium hosted by the School of Advanced Technologies,
was held on 1 December at the AIT Center. The speakers at the Plenary Session were Dr. Sarasin
Veerapol, Executive Vice President, Charoen Phokaphan Group, who spoke on Academe-Industry
Cooperation in Edcuation and Developing Human Resources for High Technologies; Mr. Shuichi
Takino, President of Dawn Corporation, Japan, who spoke on Web GIS: Technology Trend
and Business Scene in Japan; and Dr. Wichit Tharanon of the Faculty of Dentistry, Thammasat
University, who spoke on Rapid Prototyping Technology Applications in Medicine.

'Ocean Color Remote Sensing and the Asian Marine Environment', an open
public lecture to be held on 11 December 2000, organized by Asian Center for
Research on Remote Sensing (ACRoRS) jointly with the National Space
Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), the International Ocean Color
Coordinating Group, and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific
(ESCAP), in conjunction with the Asian Ocean Remote Sensing Training
Course 2000 to be held from 11 to 15 December.

Year End Time Sheets

The Director of Finance would like to inform all staff that staff salary for December 2000 will be paid on 20 December. Time sheets, as usual, should reach the Payroll Section no later than 12 December.

Employees who work overtime or take leave during 12-22 December are required to submit an extra time sheet to be attached to the January 2001 time sheet.
