Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tan Phat, President of VNU-HCM and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education and Training, the Republic of Viet Nam, and his delegation met with AIT administration and faculty, led by Prof. Jean-Louis Armand, AIT President; School Deans, Dean of AIT Extension.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tan Phat expressed the interest to establish an academic collaboration with AIT during his visit to AIT on Wednesday, 13 May 2002. Upon his return to Viet Nam, a proposal on an academic collaboration between AIT and VNU-HCM will be developed and send to AIT.

Below is the speech delivered by of Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tan Phat, President of Viet Nam National University - HoChiMinh City, during his visit to AIT

Mr. President,
Ladies and gentlemen,

First of all, on behalf of the Viet Nam National University - HoChiMinh City delegation, I would like to express our happiness of coming to a beautiful country,Thailand, to meet with friendly Thai people. And especially today we are honored to be warmly hosted by the leaders of your university even though you are very busy people.

Let me briefly introduce us to you. Viet Nam National University HoChiMinh City (VNU-HCM) is one of the two biggest national universities in Vietnam. Established since 1995. VNU-HCM has three member universities and other organisational units. The member universities are University of Technology, University of Natural Sciences, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Other organizational units are Faculty of Economics, Research Institute for Environment and Resources, Highschool for the Gifted Students, Center for International Education, Foreign Language Center, Center for Information Technology Development, Center for Quality Assessment & Testing, Center for National Defense Education, etc..... VNU-HCM is a multi-disciplinary unversity which focuses on four disciplines: natural sciences, social sciennces and humanities, technology/engineering, and economics. Presently, VNU-HCM offers 43 bachelor degree programs, 8 associate degree programs, 59 master degree programs and 73 doctorate degree programs. The undergrauate programs have 27,000 students and graduate programs have 2,000 students. The VNU-HCM has 1,208 faculty in which 780 have graduate degrees.

In Viet Nam, VNU-HCM and VNU-HN are recognized as leading universities in terms of quality and scope. However, we are deficient in some areas. In other words, we are behind other regional universities in a number of areas.

We are in the process of defining the strategic direction for a speedy upgrade of our infrastructure, facilities, curriculum, administration, etc,.... to achieve regional and international standards. And today we come to your country and your university with the above mission. This trip, we are concerned with the following issues:

1. First, how to build up and develop staff, especially faculty.
2. Second, teaching methodology, undergraduate and curricula, teaching materials, textbooks, etc,...
3. Third, facilities for teaching, learning, research.
4. Fourth, research activities, technology transfer, application of research.
5. Fifth, sources of finance.
6. Sixth, contruction of offices, universities, laboratories, etc,...

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, we would like to have your assistance in searching for solutions to ourn issues and to discuss future co-operation between our two institutions.
