University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka

June 13, 2002: Prof. Gunapala Nanayakkara (right) Director, Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, visited to AIT to discuss with AIT President, Prof. Jean-Louis Armand (second from left) on the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) and AIT. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is one of major universities in Sri Lanka. It is located in Gangodawila, Nugegoda, eight miles away from Colombo, in the vicinity of the new capital of Sri Lanka - Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.

There are over 7,000 full-time students enrolled in the university. The university consists of five faculties - Arts, Medical Sciences, Applied Science, Management Studies and Commerce, and Graduate Studies.

University of Queenslands (UQ), Australia

June 17, 2002: Dr. Bertram Frost, Faculty of Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Architecture, and Assistant Professor Susan Hamilton, center, Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences, University of Queenslands (UQ), Australia, visited AIT. They met AIT administration, School Deans, Dr. Mousa M. Nazhad , Processing Technology Program Coordinator, and Dr. Mauno Juhani Ruhanen of Pulp and Paper Technology Field of Study Coordinator.

South China University of Technology (SCUT), PRC
June 17, 2002: Prof. Liu Huanbin, left, President, South China University of Technology, People's Republic of China, came to AIT on 17 June to explore possible collaboration with AIT. He met Prof. Mario T. Tabucanon, Provost; Prof. Gothom Arya, Registrar; Prof. H. N. Phien, Dean of School of Advanced Technologies; Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Dean of School of Civil Engineering; Prof. Chongrak Polprasert, Dean of School of Environment, Resources and Development; Dr. Mousa M. Nazhad, Processing Technology Program Coordinator; and Dr. Mauno Juhano Ruhanen, Pulp and Paper Technology Field of Study Coordinator.

SCUT, former South China Institute of Technology, was founded in 1952 by combining some departments or colleges in twelve universities, such as Engineering Colleges of Zhongshan University, Lingnan University, South China joint University and Hunan University. SCUT was elected one of the national key universities and an advanced unit in 1960 due to its famous scholars and solid foundations of disciplines.

Since its establishment, SCUT has reached brilliant achievements in innovating education, thus setting up a complete system to cultivate students who study for bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees. It has 11 colleges 31 departments, 33 regular specialties, 49 master's programs, 22 doctoral programs and 4 stations for postdoctoral researches. It has an enrollment of over 13,000 full time students,10,000 of whom are undergraduates and 2,400 are postgraduates, together with overseas students from 8 foreign countries, which makes it rank among the largest universities of China.

An AIT Alumnus from Chinese Taipei

June 18, 2002: Dr. Mao Chi-Kuo, Chairman of Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., Taiwan, visited to discuss academic collaboration between AIT and Chunghwa Telecom. Co., Ltd. He met AIT Administration, led by Prof. Mario T. Tabucanon, Prof. Gothom Arya, Prof. Kazi M. Ahmed of Telecommunications Program, and Dr. Teerapat Sanguankotchakorn, TC Coordinator.

Before assuming this position in August 2000, Dr. Mao, an alumnus of AIT (CRD '75), was Vice-Minister of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), Taiwan, responsible for telecommunications and post affairs of the Ministry. His major contributions include the reforming of the telecommunications regulatory regime and the programming of the concession process for mobile and fixed-line services. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
