Welcome Faculty

The School of Advanced Technologies is pleased to welcome two new Faculty
members joining from June 2002

Prof. Ryuzo Yokoyama (left), Visiting Professor in the Space Technology
Applications and Research Program.

Prof. Yokoyama is an internationally recognized researcher in image
processing, remote sensing, and environmental data analysis. He received
his bachelor degree from Tohoku University in the field of electrical
engineering and the Ph.D. from Rochester University, USA. He has been a
professor in the Faculty of Engineering, Iwate University (national
university) and has long experience in teaching and research. He published
many of technical papers in international journals.

Prof. Yokoyama is teaching the course AT09.01 Principles of Remote Sensing
(joined with Prof. Fumio Yamazaki) in this May 2002 Term and can be

Dr. Sumanta Guha (right), joins the Computer Science and Information
Management Program as a full time Associate Professor.

Dr. Guha got his B.Sc., and M.Sc., in Pure Mathematics from the
University of Calcutta, Calcutta in 1975 and 1979 respectively. His first
Ph.D. degree is in Mathematics, obtained at Indian Statistical Institute,
Calcutta in 1987. In 1990 and 1991, he obtained other MS and Ph.D. degrees
in Computer Science and Engineering from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

His research interest are Computational Geometry, Graphics, and Robotics.
He will teach among other the following courses: Information Organization and Retrieval and Computational Geometry

The School of Environment, Resources and Development cordially welcome two new faculty members, starting June 2002 as follows:


Dr. Cecilia Ng (left), is a Visiting Associate Professor in the Gender and Development Studies Field of Study, the Rural Development, Gender and Resources (RDGR) Program

Dr. Ng was previously an Associate Professor at the Universiti Putra Malaysia opting for early retirement in July 2000. She Studied at Swarthmore College, Harvard University and the University of Malaya. From 1994 to 1999, she was a Research Fellow at the United Nations University, Institute for New Technologies (Maastricht, the Netherlands) where, with Prof. Swasti Mitter, she coordinated two research projects on 'technological change and women's employment in Asia' and 'teleworking and development in Malaysia'. Dr. Ng has conducted research and published widely on gender and development, with a focus on globalization, technological change and women's employment. Her latest publications are 'Positioning women in Malaysia: Class and gender in an industrializing state'(1999, London: Macmillan) and 'Teleworking and development in Malaysia'(ed.)(2001, Kuala Lumpur: UNDP). At AIT, Dr. Ng will be involved mainly in teaching a course 'New Technologies, Industrialization and Gender', as well as editing the AIT-based Journal of Gender, Development and Technology.

Dr. Ng is active in women's groups in Malaysia and is a founder member of the Women's Development Collective (WDC) and the All Women's Action Society (A W AM), where she is involved in research, training and advocacy on advancing women's issues in general, and sexual harassment in the workplace in particular. Dr. Somsak Boromthanarat (right) is a Visiting Lecturer in the Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management Field of Study (Integrated Tropical Coastal Zone Management Area of Specialization), the Agricultural and Aquatic Systems and Engineering (AASE) Program

Dr. Somsak is a Director of the Coastal Resources Institute and a Lecturer at the Faculty of Natural Resources, Prince of Songkla University, Hadyai. He obtained Ph.D. in Oceanology(coastal ecosystem management) in 1986 from University of Aix Marseille II, France; M.Sc. in Biology in 1979 from University of the Philippines-Diliman; and B.Sc. in Fisheries in 1969 from Kasetsart University. His specialization covers natural resources and environmental ecosystem; integrated coastal zone management; government and non-government roles in resource management; regular systems and decision-making process; community-based resources management and co-management of coastal and ecosystem resources; program and project management; and interdisciplinary perspective on issues identification and analysis.
