The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan

On June 21, Mr. Shutaro Omura, Deputy Director, Multilateral Cooperation Division, Economic Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, accompanied by Mr. Masaru Harada, Second Secretary and Mr. Atsushi Ozu, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan, Bangkok, visited AIT to discuss Japanese Government-AIT cooperation.

The delegation met AIT Administration, led by Prof. Jean-Louis Armand, AIT President.

Hungarian Ambassador to Thailand

On June 26, H.E. Mr. Sandor Jolsvai, Hungarian Ambassador to Thailand, made an official visit to AIT. The Hungarian Ambassador met AIT Pres. Jean-Louis Armand and the Deans to discuss possible collaboration, particularly in the field of technical sciences and management. His Excellency has recommended AIT to establish link with universities in Hungary such as Central European University, Technical University of Budapest. The Central European University has an International Master's in Management (IMM) Program which is a collaborative effort of four top business schools: Krannert Graduate School of Management of Purdue University in the United States; Tias Business School of Tilburg University in the Netherlands; IMC Graduate School of Management of Central European University in Budapest, Hungary; and ESCP-EAP European School of Management in Paris, France. In addition, there is also potential in faculty exchange and other academic collaboration between the Central European University and AIT.

Central European University(CEU) is an internationally recognized institution of post-graduate education in social sciences and humanities. It serves as an advanced center of research and policy analysis and facilities academic dialogue while preparing its graduates to serve as the region's next generation of leaders and scholars.

Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI)

On June 26, Dr. Goran Nilsson Axberg, Deputy Director, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) came to AIT to discuss about possible areas of collaboration between SEI-AIT. SEI has the intention to increase its involvement in the region. Both Institutes share a mutual interest in environment and development issues. The AIT's GIS Center and SEI will jointly conduct research with AIT on environment and other development activities in the region.

SEI is an independent, international research institute specializing in sustainable development and environment issues at local, national, regional and global policy levels.

Korea University, Korea

On June 27, Professor Eui-Gak Hwang, Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS, www.gsis.or.kr) in Korea University, visited AIT's School of Management (SOM) to discuss on MOU exchange between SOM and GSIS. He became the dean of GSIS last April, prior to taking over the position he served as a Member of Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Korea (1999-2002).

The GSIS was established in 1991 in response to the demands of globalization and internationalization. The GSIS has graduate programs in Department of International Studies, Department of Korean Studies, Department of Electronic International Commerce, Samsung Program.

The major goals of the GSIS are to develop specialists in the field of international relations and commerce and the globalization of Korean studies. Thus, the GSIS aims to further Korea's understanding of the world as well as to further the world's understanding of Korea.

The GSIS offers three Master's and Ph.D Degree Programs under the Department of International Studies, the Department of Korean Studies, and Department of Electronic International Commerce. The GSIS is open to students of all nationalities, and all courses are taught either in English or, in the case of area studies, in the relevant language.

Korea University (www.korea.ac.kr) is one of the best known university in Korea which was established in 1905. Currently, it has 13 colleges in undergraduate level and many graduate schools. The number of undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in Korea University are about 30,000. Also, four players(Hong Myungbo, Lee Chunsoo, Cha Doori, and Choi Sungyong) in Korean 2002 Korea-Japan Worldcup team graduated from Korea University.

Belgian Ambassador to Thailand

On June 28, H.E. Mr. Jean Marie Antoine Vaesen, Belgian Ambassador to Thailand visited AIT with the officials in charge of the Belgian cooperation in the region: Mr. Marcau Leroy, Minister-Counsellor and Regional Supervisor, Belgian Embassy in Hanoi; Mr. Dirk Heuts, Cooperation Attache for Laos; and Mr. Laurent de Valensart, Cooperation Attach? for Phnom Penh.

At the meeting with AIT President, Prof. Jean-Louis Armand, the Belgian officials informed AIT that the priority of the support from the Belgian Government has shifted from high technology to poverty alleviation in the region. Thereby, any further bilateral assistance from the Belgian Government to AIT will take in the form of scholarships. The Belgian delegates were interested to learn about any problems that the students from the region faces while studying at AIT. In addition, the delegates were also interested to know the selection process of students for the scholarships at AIT.
