Welcome Faculty

The School of Environment, Resources and Development cordially welcomes new faculty members, starting September 2002 as follows:


Prof. Kuldip Singh Sayann (left) is a Visiting Professor in the Energy Program under Indian Government Secondment

Prof. Sayann is a Professor and the Head of the Department of Research and Teaching at MACT (a Regional Engineering College and now National Institute of Technology), Bhopal, India. He obtained his M.Tech. (Hydro) from MACT, Vikram University, Bhopal with 1st Class and Ph.D. Mechanical (Hydro Power) from IIT, Mumbai, India. He worked over 13 years as Research Professor and teaching to undergraduate and post-graduate students. He was involved with all administrative and academic duties as Dean (Planning and Development) for 2 ½ years and as Principal for 3 years at MACT. He has more than 30 years of experience in research and teaching in hydraulic mechanics and micro-hydro energy. He specializes in design, production and testing of pumps and turbines, hydraulic machines laboratory and micro-hydro energy and has published more than 50 technical papers.

A full fledged Energy Centre has been established at MACT, under a joint 5-year (1994-1999) technical collaborating project of Indian Government and British Government. Prof. Sayann served as the Coordinator of the Centre. As Principal of MACT, Prof. Sayann was largely responsible for upgrading it to a National Institute of Technology with deemed to be university status.

Dr. Rucha Ghate is a Visiting Lecturer in the Natural Resources Management Field of Study, the Rural Development, Gender and Resources (RDGR) Program

Dr. Ghate is currently a Reader of the Department of Economics, Nagpur University, India. She specializes in Indian forest policy and her interests are environmental economics and institutional economics. She will be teaching course ED1298Y - the Research Design and Methodology as the NRM module in September and October 2002.

The School of Environment, Resources and Development and the Urban Environmental Engineering and Management Program is also pleased to welcome Dr. Thammarat Koottatep from Thailand as Assistant Professor supported by the National Centers of Competence in Research North-South under the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology (EAWAG), Switzerland, for a period of 2 years starting September 1, 2002.

Dr. Thammarat obtained his B.Eng. from Chiangmai University in 1991, M.Eng. and D.Eng. in Water and Wastewater Engineering from Asian Institute of Technology in 1993 and 1999 respectively.

His main areas of research interests include: decentralized wastewater management, natural waste treatment systems, environmental sanitation, and material flux analysis.
