AIT’s 97th Graduation Ceremony

AIT's 97th Graduation Ceremony

On April 18, 2003, AIT's 97th Graduation Ceremony for 211 graduands from 25 countries was held at the AIT Conference Center. Prof. Jean-Louis Armand, AIT President presided over the ceremony.

Among the 211 (1 diploma, 17 doctoral and 193 master) graduates, 35 are from the School of Advanced Technologies, 2 from the School of Environment, Resources and Development, 113 from the School of Civil Engineering, and 43 from the School of Management.

The total number of AIT alumni now stands at 12,197, with the largest number of 3,201 coming from Thailand.

To mark the 97th Graduation Day, AIT was honored to have H.E. Dr. Estrella F. Alabastro, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of the Republic of the Philippines, as the Graduation speaker.

H. E. Dr. Alabastro received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering (Cum Laude) from the University of the Philippines in 1961, graduated from Rice University in Houston, Texas, obtaining her M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1965 and 1967. On her return to the Philippines from advanced studies in the United States in 1969, Dr. Alabastro joined the University of the Philippines as professor and last assumed the position of Dean.

Dr. Alabastro is a role model to students and alumni of her Philippine alma Mater. In 1977 she was voted Most Outstanding Alumna by the University of the Philippines' College of Engineering in Diliman, and in 2000, members of the UP Alumni Association bestowed on her a Professorial Award in Home Economics.

Dr. Alabastro is actively involved in the regional and international scene, including in activities carried out by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). She was the Philippines' Focal Person for the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology from 1992 to 1995; for the APEC Working Group on Industrial Science and Technology from 1994 to 1995; and, from 1997 to 1998, for the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology, a committee that she herself chaired from 1995 to 1997.
