Welcome
Three new faculty members have joined the School of Environment, Resources
and Development in September 2003.
Prof. Gopal Mugeraya, Visiting Professor in the Environmental Engineering
and Management (EEM), seconded by the Indian Government.
Prof. Mugeraya (left) received his Ph.D. (Biochemical Engineering) from the Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1995. Currently a professor in the
Department of Chemical Engineering, National Institute of Technology
Karnataka, Surathkal, India, he has more than 18 years of academic and
research experiences. His main areas of research include: bioremediation of
industrial sludges, biofertilizer from agricultural wastes, solid state
fermentation, solid waste management and sludge stabilization. Prof.
Mugeraya was awarded the prestigious 'Hindustan Dorr Oliver' National Award
2001 and also 'World Environment Day Award 2002' for his contribution in the
area of industrial biotechnology. Prof. Mugeraya is teaching ED24.07/

Prof. Shang-Gyoo Shim, Visiting Professor in the Environmental Engineering
and Management (EEM), seconded by the Korean Government.
Prof. Shim (right) received his Ph.D. (Chemical and Materials Engineering) from the
University of Iowa, USA, in 1987. Prior to joining AIT, he was director of
the Global Environmental Research Center, Korea Institute of Science and
Technology (KIST), Seoul, Korea. His main areas of research include: acid
deposition, long-range transport of air pollutants and Asian dust.

Dr. Darian W. Unger, Visiting Lecturer in the Energy (E) Field of Study
Dr. Unger (left) received his Ph.D. in Engineering Systems Management and Policy in
2003; S.M. degrees in Technology and Policy in 1999 and Civil and
Environmental Engineering in 1999, all from Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT); and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Swarthmore
College, USA. Prior to joining AIT, he was with the MIT Center for
Innovation in Product Development and at the Laboratory for MIT Energy and
Environment. Dr. Unger was awarded the prestigious MIT Carroll L. Wilson
Award for Energy Studies' in 1999, 'MIT Technology and Policy Fellowship' in 1997, and 'Westinghouse Community Service Award' in 1997. Dr. Unger is a member of IEEE Engineering Management Society, IEEE Society on the Social Implication of Technology, and American Society of Civil Engineering.
