SCE Announces New Set of Field Coordinators
Upon consultation with the faculty and with the confirmation of the Prof. Jean Louis Armand, AIT President and Prof. Mario T. Tabucanon, Provost, the School of Civil Engineering announces the appointment of a new set of Field Coordinators effective February 15, 2004.
Construction, Engineering and Infrastructure Management Field of Study
Dr. Stephen Olu Ogunlana (Nigeria) is currently a Professor of Construction Engineering and Management. He has been associated with AIT since 1990. His major areas of specialization are construction economics, project management, productivity improvement, and dynamic modeling & simulation of construction processes. Dr. Ogunlana has over 100 scholarly publications. He participates actively in international, professional, and research organizations such as the International Council of Building Innovation and Research and the Project Management Institute. He obtained his Ph. D. degree in Construction Management from Loughborough University of Technology (UK) in 1989, his master's of science in the same field and his bachelor's degree in Building Technology from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife (Nigeria) in 1984 and 1981, respectively.
Geotechnical Engineering and Geoenvironmental Engineering Field of Study
Dr. Noppadol Phienwej (Thailand), an Associate Professor in Geotechnical Engineering, has been with AIT for 16 years. Throughout these years, he has been conducting research in the areas of underground excavations, tunneling, slope stability, and rock engineering. He has been involved in a number of civil engineering infrastructure development projects in Thailand, which provided opportunities for AIT students to conduct researches. He is heavily in touch with professional societies. He currently serves as the liaison person of the Thai National Group of the Internal Tunneling Association and the editor of the Geotechnical Engineering Journal of the Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society. He was the past Chairman of the Geotechnical Committee of the Engineering Institute of Thailand and a member of its Executive Committee. He was/is also advisor to a number of state enterprises and governmental offices responsible for utility or infrastructure development and supply including the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Metropolitan Water Works Authority, Metropolitan Electricity Authority, and the Royal Irrigation Department.
Structural Engineering Field of Study
Dr. William Barry (USA), an Assistant Professor was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1992, his M.S. in Structural Engineering from Stanford University in 1993, and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a focus in structural and computational mechanics from Carnegie Mellon University in 1998. During his studies, he served as a visiting researcher in the Material Processes and Modeling group at Oakridge National Laboratory (USA) and in the Mathematics and Computer Science group at Argonne National Laboratory (USA). He worked as a research scientist at the Field Robotics Institute (FIBO) at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, focusing on finite element modeling of robot dynamics, for one year before joining AIT in 1999. Since then, he has been active in teaching courses such as 'Finite Element Methods in Engineering' and 'Continuum Mechanics' and has served on several school and institute-level committees. He has conducted research in several areas including numerical modeling of vehicle/guardrail impact, constitutive models for pavement deterioration, structural component topology optimization, and meshfree particle methods.
Transportation Engineering Field of Study
Dr. Yordphol Tanaboriboon (Thailand) has been with AIT for 17 years. He is currently a Professor of Transportation Engineering. He completed his Ph. D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1979. He obtained both his master of engineering and bachelor's degrees from Oklahoma State University (USA) in 1975 and 1973, respectively. He first assumed the coordinatorship of Transportation Engineering field of study in 1988 and has continuously served the Institute in this capacity since then.
Water Engineering & Management Field of Study
Dr. Mukand Singh Babel (India) obtained his Bachelor's of Engineering degree from Rajasthan Agricultural University (India) in 1981. He completed his master's of engineering degree from AIT with a scholarship from the Government of Japan. Dr. Babel was appointed Assistant Professor in 1983 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1989 at the Rajasthan Agricultural University where he was instrumental in developing a master's program in Irrigation Water Management. He participated in the USAID assisted Water Resources Management and Training Project in India and in 1986, he received training in water resources management for 18 weeks at the Colorado State University and Utah State University, USA. In 1990, he joined AIT for his doctoral studies, which he completed in 1993. Since 1998, he has been with the School of Civil Engineering initially as Visiting Faculty and later on as Associate Professor in Water Engineering and Management. Currently, he is teaching and supervising students in Integrated Water Resources Management, Watershed Hydrology, Water Supply Systems and Modeling of Water Resources Systems. Dr. Babel is the Faculty Coordinator of the two-phased Master of Professional Engineering (MPE) Program for Vietnamese professionals and the Modeling Tools for Environmental and Resources Management (MTERM), one of three special programs at AIT under the Danida-AIT Cooperation Program for 1999 to 2004.
