SPIE honors Prof. Awnashilal B. Sharma fellow
The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) recently honored Prof. Awnashilal B. Sharma (right) of the Telecommunications Field of Study, SAT, as one of the 33 new fellows who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the fields of optics, photonics, and imaging.
Prof. Sharma will join a prestigious list of more than 500 SPIE members recognized and noted for their contribution to the discipline since the Society's inception in 1955. The annual recognition of fellows acknowledges outstanding members for their service to the general optics community.
Prof. Sharma was recognized for specific achievements in the areas of optical fiber characterization and measurements, satellite-laser ranging, lightwave communications, and contributions to international postgraduate education in optical fiber telecommunications.
The SPIE Fellow citation acknowledges: 'Sharma is one of the pioneers of optical fiber technology and is known internationally for his important contributions to the optics community. Since the 1980s he has been involved in the organization of various international conferences such as ECOC, IOOC, and OFC. He is also known through his work as United Nations Consultant, helping developing countries strengthen
optical fiber technology and develop skilled resources.
'Sharma has also made a major contribution to telecommunications education at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Finland and the Asia-Pacific region. His textbook Optical Field Systems and Their Components is among the leading books in the field of optical fiber communications'.
SPIE - is dedicated to advancing scientific research and engineering applications of optical, photonic, imaging, and optoelectronic technologies through its meetings, education programs, and publications. For more information, contact http://www.media@spie.org
