AIT, NWFP UET Pakistan signs accord

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Peshawar, Pakistan signs accord on human resource development capacity building at a ceremony held at AIT on 27 Sept. 2004

The MoU was signed by Prof. Syed Imtiaz H. Gilani, Vice Chancellor, NWFP UET Peshawar, Pakistan and Prof. Jean-Louis Armand,, President, AIT. The event was also attended by Prof. Mario T. Tabucanon, Provost; H.E. Mir Hussain Bakhsh Bangulzai, Ambassador of Pakistan; Mr. M. Nafees Zakaria, Head of Chancery/Counsellor, Embassy of Pakistan; Prof. Huynh Ngoc Phien, Dean SAT; Dr. Nazrul Islam, Acting Dean SOM; Dr. Ajit Annachhatre, Assoc. Prof, UEM; Prof. Ashim Das Gupta, WEM, SCE; and Mr. Mohammad Talha Junaid, Research Assistant, ACECOMS

The objectives of the MoU is to provide higher education opportunities for faculty members of UET Peshawar, promote institutional linkage between UET Peshawar and AIT, and to explore other avenues for possible collaboration. Through the program two special packages will be provided for human resource development capacity building needs of UET Peshawar faculty focusing on the AIT Doctoral Program through Non-Resident Ph. D. program and Full time Doctoral program. The MoU will cover a period of five years.

After the accord signing ceremony, Professor Syed Imtiaz H. Gilani visited the SAT, SCE, SOM and SERD as well AIT Extension. He also met with the Pakistani Community and their families in a special event organized by the Pakistani Students Association. Professor Syed Imtiaz H. Gilani likewise gave a Seminar on 'Recognizing the Role of Engineers Today for a Better Tomorrow' at the Milton E. Bender, Jr. Auditorium on Friday, 1 October 2004 at 3:00 p.m.

Prior to his current position, Professor Gilani served as Minister for Education, Information, Culture, Sports, Tourism, Archives and Archeology and Youth Affairs for the Government of NWFP, Pakistan. Professor Gilani is an alumnus (1971) of AIT.

UET Peshawar is one of the prestigious national universities in Pakistan established as a College of Engineering in 1952 and upgraded to the status of Univeristy in 1980. UET Peshawar is mandated to promote engineering science and technology development through education, training and research. The first batch of Engineering graduates passed out in 1955 and about ten thousand engineers have been graduated so far from this institution. UET Peshawar runs M.Sc and PhD programs as well.
