Tsunami expert Shuto to lecture at AIT
Professor Nobuo Shuto (right), a world renowned expert on tsunami will lecture 'Tsunamis: Their Coastal Effects and Defense Works' at the AIT Conference Center on Monday, 9 May 2005. In his lecture, Prof. Shuto will describe tsunamis and related disasters, share a tsunami numerical simulation and expound on tsunami defense works.
Prof. Shuto was recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1996 with an 'International Coastal Engineering Award' for his pivotal role and worldwide leadership over the past 30 years on tsunami research. In 1991, Prof. Shuto received the W.M. Adams Award from the Tsunami Society for his outstanding contributions to research on earthquake, tsunami, and tsunami warning systems. In 1989, he was commended by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers for his study on highly accurate forecasting of near-field tsunamis.
Dr. Nobuo Shuto is Professor Emeritus at Tohoku University and a Professor of Natural Disaster Sciences at Iwate Prefectural University. From 1990 - 1998, he served as Professor of Tsunami Engineering at the Disaster Control Research Center of Tohoku University. He was a former SCE faculty from 1971 to 1973 and taught on Coastal Engineering.
Prof. Shuto obtained his Bachelor's of Engineering and Doctor of Engineering degrees from the University of Tokyo (Japan).
