MoU Signing between UNEP and AIT
On 20 June 2005, The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and AIT signed
a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to renew their collaboration to enhance
and increase joint implementation of activities in the area of environment and
sustainable development. These activities will be carried out through the Regional
Resource Center for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) which is based on the AIT
campus, and is recognized as a Joint Academic Center.
The MoU, covering the period of three years, was signed by Prof. Mario T. Tabucanon,
Acting President of AIT, and Mr. Surendra Shrestha, Director of RRC.
AP, UNEP.
The overall goal of the Center is to strengthen the capacity of government
environment agencies and non-state actors to address sustainable development
through the environment window. RRC.AP also assists UNEPs regional delivery
of the program of work as well as address national/regional priorities through
technical resources grounded on quantitative and sound science. It serves as
the regional operational center to implement the assessment and early warning
programs to assist governments to articulate priorities through sound data and
information. RRC.AP is involved in assisting with identification, analysis and
address emerging issues of the region through projects and programs jointly
with partners in the region and partnering with implementation and delivery
of
programs through joint action to enhance and strengthen the environment community
in the region.
