AIT hosts Numerical Simulation for Disastrous Phenomena International Workshop

AIT recently hosted an international workshop on Numerical Simulation for
Disastrous Phenomena. The event, held on 8 December, was jointly organized by
the School of Engineering and Technologies (SET), AIT and the GSIC, Tokyo
Institute of Technology (a.k.a. Tokyo Tech).

Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Vilas Wuwongse, Vice President, External Relations; Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Dean, SET and Prof. Takayuki Aoki, Chairman, International Relation Committee, GSIC, Tokyo Tech. The workshop -- featuring 18 interesting presentations followed by active discussion among the 43 participants -- provided a forum for exchange and update of information on numerical simulation of disaster phenomena. A meeting among AIT and Tokyo Tech students was held in follow-up to the conference on 9 December.

AIT has various experience in simulation of disaster phenomena, and most importantly, it is committed to the application of such technology in our region. Tokyo Tech has advanced technologies in high precision numerical simulation under complicated scenarios. Tokyo Tech will run a 100TFlops super computer next year. The collaboration of these two institutes will effectively contribute to the advancement of the numerical simulations of disastrous phenomena and to the disaster mitigation in the region.

One collaboration in debris flow has already materialized during the past year, and another on tsunami simulation was initiated during the workshop. More collaboration is expected and we hope that their outcomes will be presented at the next symposium in 2006. An agreement between SET/AIT and GSIC/Tokyo Tech. has been finalized and it will be signed later this month. Of Note at this year's conference were warmly welcomed participants from Gifu University and Kasetsart University. With this workshop's encouraging results, the participation of more researchers for such collaboration and future workshops is strongly encouraged.
