Recent incidents prompt safety and security concerns

Dr. H. L. Tien, head of Infrastructure informed the AIT community about the recent unfortunate happenings on campus and requests for cooperation and vigilance so that they may not happen again.

One evening, while a woman was taking a walk on campus, a pet dog owned by one of the residents suddenly attacked her.

A car window of a resident was damaged by unidentified person/s.

The spare power cable in the electric boardroom was stolen.

Some unidentified residents continue to ignore reminders on proper garbage disposal (recent report is the improper disposal of garbage in the garbage station near ST-4).

Some AIT personnel entered the Science Park by illegally crossing the west-end boundary. Please be recalled that the piece of land at the west-end had been transferred by AIT to Science Park. Barbed wire and barriers are temporarily installed to mark the boundary lines and deter illegal entrants.

The Infrastructure Office has a number of existing campus rules and regulations. Disregard of these policies cause problems and harm to the community. Aside from the incidents mentioned above, another violation is the parking of cars in the grassy area which damage the grass. The restoration of the damaged grassy area would of course entail some maintenance cost. Thus, the office requests for AITians' cooperation, especially private car owners to observe proper parking.

AIT is a vast 130-hectare campus with a population of more or less of 4,000 and around 170 buildings. However, the number of security guards on campus has been reduced significantly this year as part of the cost-reduction strategy.

'In as much as the Infrastructure Office makes efforts to enforce the campus rules and apprehend violators, our resources are just insufficient to man every corner of AIT, its properties and the people,' Dr. Tien said. 'Hence, the office would like to solicit the cooperation of everyone to help our Safety and Security Office by reporting any violation of campus rules or any untoward incident.'

If any AITian has noticed anything unusual, report to the security guard nearest you or at Ext. 6000.
