SOM dean speaks on Eastern perspective
Professor I.M. Pandey, dean of the School of Management, gave a talk on 'Cross-culture Leadership: The Eastern Perspective' at the 2006 International Business School Shanghai Conference, Antai College of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University on 28 and 29 March 2006.
He emphasised the need for using management education in the East to develop enlightened minds for social change and sustainable development in addition to creating economic wealth. He asserted that given the complexities and challenges of the East, the pre-packaged management education materials designed by Western or the Westernised management gurus is not of much use to the East.
The Western view of management universalism, according to Prof. Pandey, is a myth, and is perhaps driven by the motive for making fast money from the fast growing emerging economies. Management education is contextual and ingrained into cultural relativism.
He outlined the building blocks for bridging the cultural gap.
