Masters thesis competition updates guidelines

Prof. Sudip Rakshit, vice president for research, has provided more updates on the AIT Masters Thesis Competition – May 2006 as follows:

Mr. Ashok Ghosh, the President of J.K.Cements, one of the largest cement companies in India and part of the Singhania Group of companies, during his recent visit to AIT agreed to sponsor the competition.

The awards will thus be called the 'YP Singhania AIT Masters thesis award'. Winners will be awarded cash prizes and certificates during the graduation ceremony. One runner up will also receive a certificate.

The competition will be held on the following dates:

Competition 1: School of Management (Management of Technology, International Business, Service Marketing and Technology, International Public Management): 15 May (Afternoon)

Competition 2-4: School of Engineering and Technology (Information and Communications Technologies, Civil, and Industrial Systems Engineering): 16 May (Morning)

Competition 5-7: School of Environment, Resources and Development (Resources, Energy & Environment, and Development): 17 May (morning)

These dates were suggested since 15 May is the last date for student clearance and 18 May is the Academic Senate Review of students meeting.

There will be parallel sessions of theses presentations for the categories under the School of Engineering & Technology and the School of Environment, Resources & Development.

The competition venue was changed to the AIT Conference Center rooms to allow for parallel sessions.

The field of study coordinators are requested to provide the names of students by 10 May.

ITServ has created a Web site where the names, photograph and title of the presentation will be posted on receipt.

Each field of study was requested to provide two selected entrees who will take part in the group wise competition. However if the field of study and the group feel they are constrained by this please feel free to discuss the same with the vice president for research. There is a limitation of time and hence this has been suggested.

However, as in the Energy and Environment group, for example, if the concerned groups and field of study feel that more candidates should be included it may possible as there are only two fields of study in that group.

Again in the School of Management with large differences in student numbers between International Business, Management of Technology, Service Marketing and Technology, International Public Management (besides other combination students) the faculty may decide to choose four of the best candidates from the school.

Each individual presentation will be for 20 minutes followed by discussion. The judging criteria will include: relevance, presentation skills, scientific contribution, general knowledge of the field, future potential for innovation, originality, etc. It is suggested that these research skills be taken into account in the choice of candidates. The names of judges along with their brief CVs will be posted soon.

All field of study coordinators and the school deans once again are requested to assist in this endeavor.
