Use care when opening MS Word attachments

A critical security vulnerability has been discovered that affects nearly all versions of Microsoft Word. It can be used to propagate viruses or worms through Word documents attached to e-mail or found on web sites. Infection takes place when the document is opened. Microsoft plans to release a corrective update for Office products on 13 June. This update will be available on AIT's Windows Update mirror as soon as it is released, and will be automatically installed on all computers making use of automatic update. About automatic updates, see http://wuserv.ait.ac.th/#wu

Until then special care is needed when manipulating Word documents of uncertain origin. Full details are available at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/919637.mspx

Also make sure that you are using the AIT anti-virus software. See http://avserv.ait.ac.th/#av for information. Use of any other anti-virus program is strongly discouraged.

Please be reminded that most pre-installed versions of Norton anti-virus are either pirated or demonstration versions that expire quickly and are therefore no longer updated. Remove them and use the AIT anti-virus instead. Contact the ITServ Helpdesk (ext. 6082) if you need assistance.
