AIT study sparks safety concern in Bangkok housing

The AIT investigation found cracks and chipping concrete due to corrosion of rebar in Din Daeng apartments. AIT’s study fueled safety concerns for the area’s 45,000 residents, and plans are under way to address those concerns.

A study carried out by AIT on low-income housing in the Din Daeng area of Bangkok has raised concerns for the safety of the residents. The study was conducted from 2002 to 2005 by Dr. Pichai Nimityongskul, an associate professor at the School of Engineering and Technology with a 5.3 million baht grant from Thailand’s National Housing Authority. Since the possible instability of the buildings that house as many as 45,000 people has come to light, English and Thai Bangkok newspapers have covered the story almost daily.
