Malaysian delegation looks at Urban Environmental Management
A delegation of 22 representatives led by its Chairman Mr. Haji Rozali bin Haji Mohamud from the Municipal Council of Seberang Perai, Penang, Malaysia, visited AIT on August 24, 2006.
The faculty of Urban Environmental Management and the staff of the SEA-UEMA project received them. The delegates comprised members of the municipal council concerned with urban environmental management and implementation. Mr. Mohamud introduced his team and said they were on a study tour to learn more about environmental policies, good practices and environmental management systems in Thailand.
Dr. Ranjith Perera, UEM coordinator and SEA-UEMA project director, briefed the delegates about the academic and collaboration activities of the field of study, with emphasis on the SEA-UEMA project. The project staff presented activities of its various components in target countries including Malaysia, focusing on the three environmental sub-sectors of water and sanitation, solid waste and air pollution.
During the ensuing interactions, the visitors expressed their eagerness to participate in forthcoming SEA-UEMA project activities in Malaysia, especially in Penang where a policy dialog on solid waste management has been planned in January 2007. It is based on the ongoing demonstration project on organic waste composting implemented by the Socio-economic and Environmental Research Institute.
