Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will present awards to an associate professor and an AIT alumnus on 23 October 2006 in Caracas, Venezuela. The Princess will present “The King of Thailand Vetiver Awards” for the most outstanding achievements on vetiver at the Opening Ceremony of the Fourth International Conference on Vetiver. Vetiver is a type of grass used in applications that range from erosion control to backet-making and roof-thatching.

Among the awards recipients are AIT faculty member Dr. Pichai Nimityongskul of the Structural Engineering field of study, School of Engineering and Technology and Dr. Thammanoon Hengsadeekul, an AIT alumnus (SEC ’95 & ’06) who were selected to receive the King of Thailand Certificate of Excellence under the Non-Agricultural Application category. Drs. Pichai and Thammanoon were recognized for their research work relating to the use of vetiver grass on “The Prefabricated Vetiver Grass-Clay Composite Blocks: Design and Production.”

Based on the previous research with the Royal Project Foundation on the construction of Grain Silo Using Vetiver Grass-clay composites, a new type of precast construction products for low-cost housing using vetiver grass and clay as raw materials is developed.

It is expected that this new technology will make housing more affordable for low-income people living in rural areas.
