AIT Alumnus in Sri Lanka receives National Science and Technology Award



Eng. S.M.K.B. Samarakoon, an alumnus of AIT (Computer Science) received Sri Lanka’s National Science and Technology Award for the year 2006, under the category of Quality Improvement of Products, Processes and Services. The award presentation was jointly organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka. It was formally presented by H.E. the President Hon. Mahinda Rajapakse at an award ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat on 10 November 2006. He was recognized for his research and development of “Automatic Data Acquisition System for Process Monitoring and Diagnostics” which is installed in four power stations of Mahaweli Ganga which did not have such automatic systems. Installation at other power stations is presently in progress.

Eng. Samarakoon is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), Editor of IESL Central Centre and Chief Engineer (Computer Applications & IT) of Asset Management-Hydro Electrical division of Ceylon Electricity Board.

Eng. Samarakoon was also the recipient of the prestigious Wimalasurendra Award from IESL in the year 2000. He had won several awards including the “Award for Excellent Achievement” from the Center for International Corporation for Computerization (CICC), Japan in 1999 for ‘best student’ of the training program conducted by CICC.

Eng. Samarakoon obtained his bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. He is also a Chartered Member of the Engineering Council (UK) and also the Chair of Central Region Subsection (2006) of IEEE Sri Lanka Section and a member of IET (former IEE).

He is the President of the Dharmaraja College Archives Foundation and Vice President (Public Relations) of Kandy Toastmasters Club.
