Dean SET cites facts in Suvarnabhumi’s “Distress in the Tarmac”

Last October Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport was spotted the first sign of rutting in five of the six taxilanes and in one taxiway. Many have been wondering why this situation took place. On Sunday, 11 March 2007, an article “Distress in the Tarmac”, written by Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Dean of Engineering and Technology (SET), AIT, appeared in the Bangkok Post’s Perspective, tells the readers that because the airport site is located in the floodway of Bangkok’s eastern suburbs, it requires both effective flood protection and drainage systems to avoid problems caused by water seepage into the sand blanket under the airport’s taxiways and runways. The following article intends to provide technical facts to the readers who want to understand what really happened to the airfield pavement of this new airport.
