AIT Vice President for Research participates in Convention of Biodiversity Meeting

From 15-18 April 2007, Prof. S.K. Rakshit, Vice President for Research, on invitation attended a meeting of the Secretariat of the Convention of Biodiversity (CBD) at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The meeting was organized by the CBD secretariat with the help of the University of Malaya, Swiss Agency of Environment, UNEP/GEF Biosafety network etc. The main agenda of the meeting was to develop collaborative networks of universities and colleges working in the broad area biosafety which in its broadest sense includes natural resource management, advanced agricultural biotechnology, social and consumer aspects of genetically modified products, risk assessment, detection methods, legal and IP aspects, etc. As this is a new area of considerable importance, with suitable collaboration and support there are strong prospects for AIT to serve as a hub for awareness building, training workshops and in the medium term in formal degree programs in the area.
