Ph.D Research Fellowship Offered at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology
A fully funded PhD research fellowship is offered in the DASCOSA project at the Department of Computer and Information Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
DASCOSA (Database Support for Computational Science Applications) is a research project at NTNU that aims at developing support for efficient database management in Grid systems. DASCOSA is funded by the Norwegian Research Council under the eVITA (eScience - Infrastructure, Theory and Applications) research and infrastructure programme.
Database management in Grid systems is challenging because of a high degree of distribution, autonomous database nodes, and heterogeneous data. DASCOSA will use a combination of peer-to-peer technology combined with traditional techniques from parallel and distributed database management systems to realize a loosely coupled Grid database system that is both scalable and can support efficient query processing. A more detailed description of the project can be found at
http://www.research.idi.ntnu.no/dascosa/ or by contacting the project leader Kjetil Norvag at noervaag@idi.ntni.no
Requirements: Master of Science / Master of Engineering (or equivalent) in Computer Science or in Computer Engineering, with a GPA equivalent to ECTS 'B' or better. Familiarity with database management systems, distributed systems and program development would be considered a plus. Applicants must satisfy the formal grades requirements for admission to the PhD studies at NTNU. See
http://www.ime.ntnu.no/Dr.gradsstudier_eng/ for detailed information on the PhD programs. PhD fellowships at NTNU are normally awarded for a total of 4 years.
Specific Conditions: The PhD fellowships are placed in Norwegian salary code 1378, gross NOK 325.600 per year (equivalent to approx. EUR 41.000 and USD 55.000).
Living Costs in Norway: A rule of thumb is that one pays appr. 35% tax on net income. Public health care system is free for all (due to the tax level). Generally there is no need for private health care insurances. Education on all levels is free for all. Housing normally cost between NOK 4000 (for a simple one bed studio with kitchenette, possibly shared bathroom) and 8000 (for a 3-4 piece apartment suitable for a small family) per month.
Application Procedure: The application should as a minimum include the following: 1) Curriculum Vitae, 2) Certified copies of diplomas awarding the relevant degree(s), 3) A short presentation of the motivation for a PhD study, a statement about the relevance of your background for the DASCOSA project, and the applicant's view of challenges within the research area(s).
The application should be marked IME-042/2007 and sent to the following address:
The Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, NO-7491 Trondheim, NORWAY
The envelope must be stamped no later than the application closing date (yyyy-mm-dd): 2007-07-25. Please also notify noervaag@idi.ntni.no by e-mail that an application has been submitted.
