AIT’s Golden Jubilee Fundraising Campaign (GJFC) and the Water Engineering and Management (WEM) Field of Study at the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) jointly organized a seminar on Hydroinformatics and its applications on 4 December 2007. It was fourth in the series of water seminars conducted by leading figures in the field of water since 2006. WEM Field of Study Coordinator, Dr. Mukand S. Babel, welcomed all the participants and Dr. Khin Ni Ni Thein, AIT Vice President for Development and Resources, delivered the introductory remarks that explained the relevance of the Institute’s strategic development plan, its six thematic areas and the water seminar series. She then introduced the speakers to the audience.

The first of the three lectures was entitled, “Hydroinformatics-modeling and information systems for water management” and was delivered by Professor Dimitri P. Solomatine, Professor of Hydroinformatics and Academic Leader of the Hydroinformatics Core at UNESCO-IHE. He spoke on the main technologies and tools of hydroinformatics and examples of ways in which they are being used in various water-related problems today. He also elaborated on the master’s program in Hydroinformatics at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands. The second lecture entitled, “Application of Hydroinformatics Technologies in Urban Water Management” was delivered by Dr. Zoran Vojinovic, Associate Professor at UNESCO-IHE. He addressed the main problems of urban water management and the usefulness of the present applications and the potential areas of application of hydroinformatics technologies. In terms of outcomes of this seminar, indeed it paved the way to forge a meaningful partnership under the name of “Hydroinformatics” between higher education institutes and the private sector involved in the business of Hydroinformatics. The international dual degree course on Hydroinformatics and the refresher course for UNESCO-IHE alumni entitled “Integrated Urban Water Management under Climate Change – Modelling and Risk Assessment”, in collaboration with AIT, have been proposed. As a concrete output, it was decided that a roundtable meeting to raise funds for the “International Urban Water Management” course will be held at AITCC in April 2008.
