The Asian Institute of Technology has joined with Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the Thai Ministry of Energy to participate in a new initiative called the "Thai People Network against Global Warming with New Thinner Fluorescent Lamp". The alliance includes thirty three other organizations. AIT is the only educational institution participating in this program intended to save on the consumption of energy and mitigate global warming.
The objective of this alliance is to replace their (members of the network) existing 36-watt fluorescent tubes with new, thinner 28-watt fluorescent lamps (T5), which would result in approximately 30% savings on energy consumption. This program is expected to result in carbon emission reductions of 5 million tons, power bill reductions of 25,000 million Baht, and imported fuel savings of 15,000 million Baht.
About 200 T5 lamps will be installed in the Energy Building on the campus of AIT located in Pathumthani, 40-km north of Bangkok. This could then be expanded to include other buildings and facilities throughout the campus of AIT.
A signing ceremony for this launch was held on 11 January 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand, which included Thailand’s Minister of Energy, the Governor of EGAT, the Governor of Bangkok, and the Governor of Samut Prakan province.
