The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, Hon. Mr. Rohitha
Bogollagama (above left), on 12 June paid a courtesy visit to the Asian
Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, along with a
delegation of high-ranking Sri Lankan officials which included the
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, H.E. Professor J.B.
Disanayaka. The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister was welcomed by AIT
President, Professor Said Irandoust, and senior officials of the
graduate institute located just north of Bangkok.
Bogollagama on some of the latest developments at AIT, including its
current effort to ratify a new legal Charter, which, among other
things, would legally recognize AIT as an international organization.
The AIT President also informed the foreign minister of AIT’s plan to
open a branch center in Sri Lanka in the near future.
During the discussions, numerous possibilities for strengthening
AIT-Sri Lanka Collaboration were explored. AIT officials stressed the
historical importance of Sri Lanka as a
partner and explained the ways in which the Thailand-based institute
has contributed to capacity building and higher learning of students
from Sri Lanka. Since AIT opened its doors in
1959, 796 Sri Lankans have graduated from AIT with graduate degrees.
There are currently 48 graduate students from Sri Lanka enrolled
at its Pathumthani, Thailand campus.
