On 24 July 2008, Mr. Sulaiman Syarif, Deputy Director for
Trade, Economic Services, Finance & Investment and Environment
Treaties Affairs, Directorate & Legal and Treaties, Ministry
of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia, accompanied by Mrs. Tanti
Widyastuti, Minister Counselor (Social & Culture) and Mr.
Dionnisius Elvan Swasono, Third Secretary (Information) from the
Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok paid a courtesy visit to the
institute.
Deputy Director Syarif was in Bangkok to attend the
Intergovernmental Working Group on the AIT Charter which had
earlier been scheduled on 24-25 July on behalf of the Indonesian
Government.

A dialogue between Prof. Said Irandoust, AIT president and the
deputy director transpired on campus. Recent developments on AIT
was discussed. Deputy Director Syarif kindly extended his services
to help organize and host a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, on Friday, 1 August 2008 in Jakarta, wherein many
representatives from different ministries have been invited to
attend.
Prof. Irandoust and was in Bangkok to attend the
Intergovernmental also explored possibilities wherein AIT
could join the current initiative by the Indonesian and South
African governments, the two Co-Chairs of the new Asian-African
Strategic Partnership (NAASP). The initiative aims to request
assistance to support the capacity building projects for
Palestinians. Priority sectors inlcude agriculture, education,
health, finance, administration, as well as training for
its police officers and diplomats. At the moment, only Indonesia
has committed to provide training for 1,000 Palestinians from
years 2008-2013.
