AIT expands collaboration with the Leichtweiss Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources, Technical University Braunschweig, Germany


AIT and the University of Luphana, Luneburg, Germany has recently been
discussing tackling more activities geared towards hydrology.

Under the umbrella of the institue’s Golden Jubilee Fundraising
Campaign (GJFC) initiatives, Professor. Dr. Ing. Gunter Meon,
Professor and Head of Hydrology, Water Management and Water Protection
Department, Leichtweiss Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water
Resources, Technical University Braunschweig, Germany, visited AIT on
16 September and met with AIT President Said
Irandoust,
the Vice President for Development and Resources, and
faculty colleagues from Water Engineering and Management (WEM).
Professor Meon was a visiting faculty of AIT twenty years ago.

Outcomes of the meeting were positive including an agreement to
jointly produce a project proposal for capacity building, training and
action research in the area of coastal zone management. This project
will be for submission to the government of Germany and other potential
donors.

The project aims to support the current capacities of local
communities while providing a measure to develop  professionals
with much needed knowledge, know-how and skills in the flood prone
areas of lower Myanmar that are also subject to frequent
floods, cyclones and tsunami. 

The Luphana University, Luneburg, Germany, Technical University
Braunschweig, Germany and AIT have decided to work
closely together in order to produce a 3 to 4 year project
specific to coastal zone management in Myanmar and the region.
