Advances in food processing technology and engineering are vital to
providing the general public with safe, palatable and nutritious foods
that available year-round, scientists said this week at a conference
hosted by AIT.

The 4th International Conference on Innovations in Food Processing
Technology and Engineering (ICFPTE ’08) on 19-20 January showcased new
and innovative research that is currently shaping the food industry.
Originally planned for December 2008, the conference was postponed
until 2009 due to the recent closure of Bangkok’s airports.

This year’s keynote speaker was Prof. Ian Warrington,
Vice President of Massey University, New Zealand, who spoke on “Global
Challenges facing Horticultural Production, Marketing and Research”.

Over 65 participants from Australia, Iran, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri
Lanka, Thailand and the United States attended the two-day event that
featured keynote lectures, parallel sessions and poster sessions.

The conference explored themes such as the physical properties of food
materials, drying technology, supply chain management, innovative food
packaging, food biotechnology, predictive modeling, and new trends in
the food industry. The conference produced 47 technical papers which
have already been published in an e-book and as a hard copy abstract
compilation.

The ICFPTE is a popular series of conferences first developed by the
FEBT and AIT’s School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD).
The initial conference was held in December 2002 at AIT. Since then,
the conference has attracted the participation of large numbers of
professionals from across the world, and has produced numerous
publications.

Welcoming the conference participants to the Asian Institute of
Technology were Vice President for Research, Prof. Sudip K.
Rakshit
, Vice President for External Relations, Prof.
Vilas Wuwongse
, and the Dean of the School of Environment,
Resources and Development, Prof. S. Kumar
